Assessmnet 1

In this assignment, you will continue the research work you started in IFQ712-1. You will not change your project topic and research methods, although your research questions could be somehow revised, with guidance from your OLA(s).
You will report your completed progress in the Methods and Results sections of your research paper. You should reflect and act on any feedback you received from Assignment 2 in IFQ712-1 as you report on the progress you have made in your Methods and Results.

Assignment Details

In IFQ712-1, you developed all the sections you needed for your research report. You will need to reflect on the feedback you received in IFQ712-1 and improve upon your report. You may well choose to reuse, expand and revise the work you produced in IFQ712-1, but it is important to understand that you should not copy directly from your IFQ712-1 assignments. Directly copying your IFQ712-1 assignments to this assignment will receive very low or no marks.
The feedback you receive on this assignment will be relevant when you come to submit your final research paper for Assignment 2.

Keep in mind that if you wish to connect with industry in some way (e.g., your employer) when undertaking this research you will need to reach out to your OLA. This is vital to do as soon as possible as you'll need to complete some agreements, consider issues of confidentiality and your intellectual property, and how this may affect the way you manage your project.
Your submission document needs to include the major sections and elements listed in the following template. You may choose to add subsections but keep in mind the need to keep your writing concise and the overall document as short as possible. Your work will be marked on quality, not quantity.

Research Questions

1. Which data can be found and used to predict EV sales in Australia?

2. What are the factors and modelling methods that make the best predictions of EV sales in Australia?

Assessment Summary

This assessment builds upon the earlier work completed in IFQ712-1: Scoping the Research Problem. Students are required to continue their research using the same project topic and research methods, making revisions only to the research questions if necessary. The focus of this task is to present the Methods and Results sections of the research paper, reflecting the progress made since the first phase.

Students must:

  • Reflect upon and integrate feedback from IFQ712-1.
  • Revise and enhance earlier sections rather than copy them verbatim.
  • Present the research design, data collection process, analytical methods, and key findings in a structured academic format.
  • Demonstrate their ability to apply the selected research methodology and interpret findings relevant to their research questions.
  • Show progress in analytical thinking, data interpretation, and academic writing quality.

Mentor-Guided Approach

The academic mentor guided the student through a systematic step-by-step process to ensure that the assessment reflected academic depth, methodological rigor, and progressive improvement from the previous submission.

Step 1: Reviewing Previous Feedback

The mentor began by helping the student carefully review the feedback received on IFQ712-1. Emphasis was placed on identifying weak areassuch as unclear methodological justification, limited scope in literature coverage, and data alignment with research questions. Together, they mapped out a revision plan that addressed each point of feedback before progressing to new sections.

Step 2: Refining Research Questions and Framework

While the topic remained unchanged, the mentor encouraged the student to slightly refine the research questions for sharper analytical focus. This ensured that the scope of inquiry aligned with available data and that the objectives were measurable. The mentor also helped the student ensure that the theoretical framework and conceptual model supported the revised questions.

Step 3: Developing the Methods Section

The mentor then guided the student in constructing the Methods section, emphasizing academic justification for each choice. This included:

  • Explaining the data sources used for EV sales and relevant economic indicators.
  • Justifying the quantitative methods and modelling techniques (such as regression or predictive modelling).
  • Ensuring alignment between data collection, analysis tools, and research objectives.
  • Writing this section in an objective and replicable manner, adhering to research ethics and academic conventions.

Step 4: Structuring the Results Section

In the Results section, the mentor advised on presenting findings clearly and concisely, using appropriate tables, charts, and narrative explanations. Focus was placed on showing how the data addressed each research questionidentifying patterns, correlations, and insights about factors influencing EV sales in Australia. The mentor also emphasized objective interpretation without overgeneralization.

Step 5: Ensuring Reflection and Integration

The mentor reminded the student that this assessment was not just about presenting results but showing research progress. Therefore, the student reflected on challenges faced during data collection and analysis, how methodological decisions evolved, and how prior feedback improved the study’s direction.

Step 6: Reviewing for Academic Integrity and Structure

Finally, the mentor conducted a detailed review to ensure originality, correct citation, and academic tone. The mentor reiterated the importance of not copying directly from IFQ712-1, ensuring that all reused sections were paraphrased, expanded, or rewritten with new insights.

Outcome and Learning Achievements

Through this guided process, the student produced a well-structured and academically sound Methods and Results section that demonstrated clear progress from the previous stage. The assessment outcome successfully met the course objectives, specifically:

  • CLO1: Applied analytical and problem-solving skills to define and refine research questions.
  • CLO2: Demonstrated professional research skills through data collection, evaluation, and interpretation.
  • CLO3: Showed the ability to apply feedback to improve academic work, ensuring continual learning and reflection.
  • CLO4: Produced evidence-based conclusions that contributed to understanding factors influencing EV sales prediction in Australia.
