1. a) Imagine a data collection system from a racing car, which generates 1TB of data per lap of the track. Data from each lap is stored in a separate file in csv format with columns representing variables such as driver name, speed, oil temperature, rpm, oil pressure and brake temperature.
(i) Describe in detail how this data would be stored on HDFS on a Hadoop cluster.
(ii) Describe how you would write a MapReduce job to calculate the average speed of each different driver. Show snippets of pseudocode where appropriate, but do not write out the whole algorithm. Make sure you describe the use of Map, Reduce, and Combine. Consider whether setup or cleanup are needed and justify your decision. Say what the keys and values would be for each stage of the process and say what data types you would use for them.
b) Compare the use of Hive to the use of a traditional RDMS. What are the similarities and what are the differences?
c) You have been asked to analyse the performance of a fluid dynamics model under a range of different parameter settings with the aim of finding the conditions under which a high flow rate can be achieved. You have been told that once the outcome of this analysis has been achieved you are unlikely to use this model again. In order to achieve this task, you will need to implement the fluid dynamics model yourself. From your initial calculations and prototype code in Python, you have worked out that a single run for a given set of parameter values is likely to take at least 10 minutes on a standard PC and that you will need to do about 2,400 runs of different parameter values in order to find an optimal configuration.
(i) Describe the high performance computing technologies and approach you would take to compute the solution, ensuring that you justify your chosen approach.
(ii) For each of the above systems that you did not use, indicate the reasons why you decided they were not suitable for the given task.
