Engineering Assessment Answer

In your own words, answer each of the following questions. Use references but avoid just quoting or paraphrasing a single source, but rather use several sources to explain your response. Do not rely on a single source or paraphrase a single source but study the questions from several sources. Plagiarising or paraphrasing (even when citing) will weaken your marks dramatically. I prefer reading your understanding of the topic (even if your English is not that good) to just reading a
section of a paper reworded without understanding.

For referencing, I advise the use of Zotero (available free from Zotero.org) which has both web browser plugins and Microsoft word plugins so that you can, with a click, save a reference from scholar.google.com for example to your Zotero database and then from work simply add citation from the new Zotero tab in work and (after choosing a journal style format) type the title or author and add the citation. At the end, use create bibliography to add all the references to the end of your answers. There is plenty of help about Zotero available from the web. However, any referencing program will work. use the Harvard style for referencing, preferably the Journal of Geodynamics (you can download their style guide within Zotero).

Question 1 — Imaging Geological Features
use several (>5) recent papers (>2009) to delve into how geophysical imaging can illuminate geological features in the subsurface. Make sure to include all the following geological features in your discussion: channels, turbidities, unconformities, faults and salt.

Question 1 Marking Criteria
Pass Response — will cite at least 5 papers — one for each of the geological features — and mention some important points answering the question. Good response — will be well structured, feature cited and appropriate diagrams and figures from the literature to illustrate the point and feature many well-chosen citations and follow
a consistent referencing style with good English. Excellent response — as for good, but will feature an excellent introduction to the topic, be logical and be presented well and be very well researched with a broad selection of highly cited articles and be close to publishable standard.

Question 2 — Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators
Assess three different methods of Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators (DHI) with reference to at least 3 journal articles answering, with examples from the papers:
i. What are the advantages of each?
ii. What are the limitations of the method?
iii. Describe the effects of burial and geological age on the effectiveness of these three different methods

Question 2 Marking Criteria
Pass Response — will cite at least 3 papers — one for each of the geophysical methods — and mention some important points answering each part of the question.
Good response — will be well structured, feature cited and appropriate diagrams and figures from the literature to illustrate the point and feature many well-chosen citations and follow a consistent referencing style with good English.
