INSTRUCTIONS   

Each student should be assigned one case law.  

Attached please find a list of case law. The attached cases cover different issues. The purpose of  this assignment is to help students read and analyze case law, write clear and concise summaries,  orally present it to their classmates, and practice their presentation skills.  

Step one: Hand out or allow the students to choose a case. It is the discretion of the instructor. 

Step two: The students will read the case at home, prepare a written summary, which must  include a description of the issue, a background and analysis of the case, the judgment and  reasons, and the law which justifies the decision. Where applicable, include the sections of IRPA  and IRPR.  

This written summary must be attached to the assignment and submitted to the instructor before the oral presentation. 

Step three: While reading your case, highlight the key words, as this case will be put on the  screen for other students to read while you are presenting. Provide a scan of the case with the  highlights to your instructor by email or on a USB. The purpose of highlighting the key words of  the case is to make it easier for your classmates to follow along during your presentation.  

Step four: Provide instructor with your assignment in paper format consisting of:  

1. the assignment 

2. the first page of the case law 

3. your written summary of the case; The font size should be 11 and the spacing between lines should be 1.15; maximum 500 words 

Step five: Present your case orally to the class. Use time wisely. Ten minutes + five minutes  maximum for questions (as applicable…). 

Title pages of some suggested court cases are attached. These cases are related in choosing a  correct NOC, preparing a CEC, FSWC, renewing a permanent resident card, etc.
