TASK: Introduction There is currently a shortage of teachers; using data from the office for national statistics we can see that the number of students in full-time education has “almost doubled since 1992” (ano, 2016). Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the number of teaching staff. In 1975 the ratio for the student: staff was 8.6:1, this number has increased by nearly 150% to 20.8:1 in 2004 (ano, 2005). This rapid increase in the number of students for every staff member is unsustainable; therefore a solution must be found. The most obvious solution would be to increase the number of people entering the education industry, while this would most likely fix the problem there are other potential solutions. One of these solutions to use artificial intelligence (A.I) to help teachers cope with larger classrooms. There are a variety of different ways A.I could be used in classrooms, they could act as a tutors that provide additional help to students when the teacher is unable to, they could automate work such as grading assignments to help reduce the workload of teachers; and in the future they may be able to replace teachers entirely. This study will focus on how teachers view A.I, specifically on whether or not teachers believe A.I can make a useful contribution to a classroom environment, and therefore the hypothesis that will be investigated is: “Teachers are currently not ready to introduce artificial intelligence into the classroom.” Furthermore, the following research questions are addressed:- Is age a factor in whether or not teachers believe A.I have/will have a place in the classroom?
- Is gender a factor in whether or not teachers believe A.I have/will have a place in the classroom?
- Will how knowledgeable a teacher is on the subject of A.I affect their views on A.I in the classroom?
