Assignment Task

In your final assessment task for this unit, you will be required to plan and implement therapy for a client that addresses their communication needs. This assessment has 3 parts:

1. Develop two SMART goals and related PICO questions and systematically search the literature for evidence to address these goals. You must include a critical appraisal for a speech and language intervention (each) relevant to your client’s needs.

2. Complete a session plan for your client, using the provided template.

3. Simulate a therapy session with your client using role play.

Objectives

By completing this assessment, you will:

• Engage in processes to support evidence-based practice in speech pathology
• Critically appraise research papers to determine the level of evidence supporting a given intervention
• Develop your ability to make clinical decisions based on available evidence and centering the client
• Develop skills in writing comprehensive and evidence-based session plans for paediatric clients with communication disorders
• Gain skills in implementing intervention for paediatric clients with communication disorders

You will need to be up to date with lectures, workshops, readings, and self-directed learning activities in preparation for Assessment 3.

Task Description

In your final assessment task for this unit, you will be required to plan and implement therapy for your client that addresses their communication needs. You will be provided with a summary of their communication profile which will be released AFTER the Week 9 examination. This assessment has 3 parts.

Part

1. Generate two short term SMART goals for your client, one specific to speech and one to language.

2. Formulate a PICO research question relating to your speech goal and your language goal Gain skills in implementing intervention for paediatric clients with communication disorders Preparation You will need to be up to date with lectures, workshops, readings, and self-directed learning activities in preparation for Assessment 3.

3. Search for intervention research papers using your PICO questions (use a research search database), locating one relevant paper each for speech and language.

4. Determine the level of evidence provided by your two papers using Paul et al.'s (2018) Table 

5. Determine the quality of the papers and their relevance to your client's speech pathology needs. You should use the CASP Critical Appraisal Checklists (found here), choosing the checklists based on the type of study reported in your papers. If you are appraising a single case experimental design study, you should use the quality appraisal tool provided below.

6. In Part 2 of the assessment, you will write a session plan targeting your two goals. Your research papers in Part 1 should be used as the source of evidence for your session plan i.e., you will plan to implement the intervention you have researched in Part 1. A session plan template has been provided for you to use below. You are free to use additional supporting references.
