This assessment will ask you to consider the importance behind making the strange
familiar and the familiar strange. In week four you will have a ‘making strange’
workshop where you will ‘make strange’ something familiar in your culture or
everyday life.
The assessment is made of two components. The first is your completed (and likely
redrafted) making strange exercise from the week four workshop. It should be 500
words and written in continuous prose. No referencing is necessary for part one of
this assessment. The ‘making strange’ portion should focus on something that is
familiar to your culture and everyday life, you will then need to ‘make it strange’ in
the style of Horace Miner. To do this you could think about the processes, rituals, or
the context that your chosen topic takes place in. While it is up to you to choose
whatever topic you see fit for this portion of the exercise you should try to keep it as
focused and narrow as possible. You may like to consider writing a piece on themes
such as: British manners, gift-giving, eating breakfast, the use of mobile phones
and/or email.
The second part of your assessment will be a ‘critical commentary’ which is a
common accompaniment for creative writing. Your critical commentary will also be
500 words and you should seek to respond to the following prompts (remember that
using specific examples tend to lead to higher marks).
1. What gave you the inspiration to focus on the topic you did? Why is it an
important or regular part of your culture?
2. Why did you decide to talk about it in the way you did? What makes it
strange?
3. What did you learn from this process? Why is it important to recognise the
strangeness in things that are familiar to us when we study culture?
