Highlights
Hand hygiene is the most effective and primary measure to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Hand Hygiene is a simple action but poorly carried out among the health care workers. The lack of compliance among health care workers is a leading contributing factor to healthcare-associated infections and problematic worldwide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020).
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are attracting attention from governments and regulatory bodies, not only because of the associated morbidity, mortality and cost of treatment, but also the growing recognition that the HAIs can be reduced and hand hygiene is the most important control measures for the HAIs (Gatzonis, 2014, Chapter 12, p. 324).
HAIs have a significant burden on the Australian health care system. HAIs accounted for an estimated 200 000 infections, 2 million bed days lost and, for surgical post-discharge infection subgroup $21 million in excess health care cost annually in Australia (Gatzonis, 2014, Chapter 12, p. 324).
Health care workers need to understand the financial burden of HAIs on the Australian healthcare system and the significant negative impact on people's health. Ineffective infection control practices by healthcare professionals possess a significant risk that is preventable by improving hand hygiene practices among health care workers (Carville & Reid-Searl, 2019, Chapter 16, p. 458).
Health care workers' hands are the most common mode of infection transmission in health care settings, including hospitals and nursing homes. Hand hygiene is a fundamental and most effective infection control technique that reduces the risk of cross-contamination. Hand washing encompasses both washing hands with the soap and water and use of alcohol-based hand rub. Hand hygiene using alcohol-based gel is more effective than hand hygiene with plain or antiseptic soap and water. Soap and water are recommended for visibly soiled hands
STRATEGY
The improvement strategy (intervention) is explained. Discussion and analysis of stakeholders, engagement, implementation strategy for the intervention, analysis of barriers and obstacles and communication strategies are outlined and justified
EVALUATION
Demonstrates understanding of how the intervention is/was evaluated or measured, includes discussion of evaluation method, clearly identifying what the intervention is being measured against. Evaluation method reflects the aims and objectives of the project.
