Highlights
Objectives: Use reflective writing to analyse your own experiences and responses to teamwork, in order to learn and improve your teamwork skills.
Background: We reflect quite naturally in our lives, thinking about things that have happened, new experiences we encounter and whether we handled them well. However, it is not sufficient to have an experience in order to learn. Reflective writing is a purposeful activity in which you analyse your experiences, or your own practices, skills and responses in order to learn. It is a critical professional skill. This assessment and the tutorials are designed to help you develop these skills.
Hurdle task: Keep notes on your initial thoughts and feelings about teamwork from DAY 1. Then (i) scrutinize your experience of teamwork and the way you dealt with it
(ii) evaluate how you worked as a team and how to do it better next time. After you have read at least one of the selected texts
(iii) reflect on the reading/s and critique the theory using your experience, that is, link theory with practice.
To start: You need to keep a reflective journal or diary from DAY 1 in which you start by recording your initial thoughts and feelings about teamwork. They can be bullet points of brief sentences that you will summarize into a 500-word introduction to your Reflective Essay. This exercise must be done before you read the selected text/s. After reading the texts – critique the article and reflect on the similarities and differences with you own experience (approx. 500 words). Conclude with a reflection on how you dealt with your teamwork tasks and how to do it better next time (approx. 500 words). Your essay must have a bibliography using Harvard UTS style (available from UTS library)
The Assessment: In tutorials each week, students will work to develop the reflective essay. The due date is 11.59pm Friday 8 May.
Essays are to be submitted via Turnitin on UTS Online by the due date. 10% will be deducted for each day the assessment is late.
Preparation each week: There is no set homework. In tutorials, you will use ACA writer- a software that will help you develop reflective writing skills. It is up to you how much time and effort you put into your preparation for the weekly tutorials – however, keep in mind that this effort will be reflected in your assessment marks.
