Management Assignment Answer

TASK: This essay will focus on how to address the increasing rate of child abuse in the Maningrida Community in the Northern Territory of Australia, and how as a Community worker I intend to engage the residents of this Community towards addressing this area of change, in the form of capacity building, and other forms of Community Engagement. I will be drawing upon the Community development model while basing my work on Community work intervention theories like the social interactionism to define and, in partnership, the Community residents, fashion out ways to addressing the desired change(s), in Maningrida Community. Working in partnership with the Maningrida Community will be key to the success of my assignment, as I believe there is no better way to getting to the root of Community problems than by involving the Community residents in my work with them. On this premise, the notion that the “society is easily understood as a multitude of a small-scale interactions between people” will suffice (Kenny,2017, P.96). Based on this theoretical standpoint, I will be looking at working in partnership with the people of Maningrida Community, in relation to what they decide to be involved with by helping them to realise their collective goals. Over all, the bulk of my work with the people of Maningrida Community will be centred on the Community Development work model. According to Kenny (2017), Community development work is about empowering the residents of a Community with the capacity for collective development of their Community. Another resonating definition is by Popple (1995), who posited that Community development work is about teaching groups and individuals the skills to improve the quality of their lives. In the light of these definitions, it is safe to say that Community development work, in simple term, is about empowering people with the capacity to take charge of their lives. In my work with the Maningrida Community, the needs assessment of the Community will be done by employing the very interactive approach of the Community Forum, which is informative and provides a good platform for easy engagement because of its involvement of Community residents, and the diverse views it brings to the table (Tropman, 1995). Community work I about ascertaining the best way to addressing Community needs, and the inclusive and interactive nature of the Community Forum makes is appropriate for easy engagement. It provides a setting for Community residents to express their opinion about Community issues. The aim of my Community work in the Maningrida Community is to ensure through proper deliberations and interactions that a solution to problem of child abuse is reduced to the barest minimum, if not completely eradicated. problem is proffered in partnership with the Maningrida Community. In pursuance of a collective action towards tackling the issue of child abuse in the Maningrida Community, appropriate networking in the form of contacting Community leaders because of their cultural competence and the influence they wield will be a good start point. The involvement of a broad range of people who are members of the Community will be key to the success of my work with the Community. The goal is to get the Community residents to be involved and determine their own issue, in doing this the Community head or leader will be given the responsibility to recommend Community members of my working committee. I will work in conjunction with the members of the working committee on how to sensitize the Community members about the goal of my work with them and fashioning out the venue, time and frequency of our interactions through the Community forum as a way of need assessment and on how to achieve the desired change. Having defined and assessed the problem of child abuse upon interacting via the Community Forum meetings with the Community members, the reasons and solutions proffered, in our deliberations will be the premise upon which the Community development model will be applied towards achieving a positive change. I will be drawing upon the Community development model in addressing the desired change in the Maningrida Community because of its propensity for engagement and capacity building. Community development is about harnessing the strengths of individuals and empowering them to take control of their lives. Unemployment or the lack of skills to secure employment leading to poverty, alcoholism and frustration are key points or factors that were identified as being responsible for the increasing cases of child abuse in my deliberations with the members of the Maningrida Community. A key component of the Community development model I will draw upon in relation to the desired change in the context of Maningrida Community are: its propensity for capacity building and strengths- based Community work. In achieving this, I will be working with local Community groups and l be collaborating with agencies to setting up programs engaging individuals and Communities to build capacity, skills and knowledge for employment. Also, collaborations with employment agencies will be established with the support of relevant government agencies towards providing employment opportunities for the people of Maningrida Community (Kenny,2017). In the same vein, victims of child abuse will be educated on their rights and on the relevant and appropriate authorities to go to for help, as this will go a long way in discouraging the act of child abuse by promoting awareness of the punitive measures that come with abuses. This will be done by representing, negotiating, advocating and mediating through relevant agencies for the benefits of the people of Maningrida Community. The Community development work is not without its critics, as it is seen to be more of an applicable approach in theory than in practice. Mowbray (as cited in Kenny,2017), identified what he called ‘localist practices’ in Community development work. He stated that claims that Community work are about seamless collaborations and a harmonious relation in practice are incorrect as they are used for political gains to aid the popularity of the government in power. In conclusion, the Community development model, in the face of the issue that was deliberated upon in Maningrida Community is the best approach for achieving the desired change the Community seek, because of its Community-friendly interactive style and its propensity for capacity building; as a way of curbing the rate of unemployment and consequently, reducing the rate of all forms of abuse in the Community of Maningrida.
