Indigenous Assignment Legislation in Canada

Assignment Task

Students will select one health policy or law (legislation) that directly affects the health of Indigenous peoples in what is currently Canada (NOTE: Students cannot use the Indian Act as a policy for their paper).

The outcomes of this assignment are that students will:

• Understand concepts related to the development and implementation of health policy and healthy public policies,
• Become familiar with major government acts, laws, policies, and programs that have influenced, and continue to influence, health policy and programming for Indigenous peoples and communities,
• Gain an understanding of how decisions are made regarding health planning, and what levers governments and organizations use to address health issues, with emphasis placed on Indigenous-controlled organizations.
• Develop a critical voice in the examination of current policy and legislative decision-making in relation to Indigenous people's health.
