This assessment will explore the impact of diabetes on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Task

As reported by AIHW (2020), The impact of diabetes varies among population groups, with rates being significantly higher among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as among non-Indigenous Australians. Students are required to:

• Complete a Venn Diagram to compare the demographic and health data profiles of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, to data of non-Indigenous Australians
• Draw health risks and conclusions based on the comparison of the data and write a 500-word response reflecting on the influence of social determinants of health for Indigenous Australians

Critically reflect on Indigenous health contexts to inform communication and engagement capabilities to work with and for Indigenous peoples across Diabetes Education and Management

Task

Consider the Social Determinants of Health identified in your Venn Diagram and analysis in Assessment. Critically discuss, given outcome research, the strengths and weaknesses in the current chronic disease management and self-management frameworks in the context of diabetes management in primary healthcare, analyse opportunities for improvement and identify and suggest mitigation strategies to address potential threats among the Indigenous population.
