Indigenous Studies: Introduction

Our course explores the events of the Canadian Indigenous Peoples beginning with pre-contact and moving through the centuries to current events including the Truth and Reconciliation process, report and recommendations. We will investigate the complexities of the Canadian Indigenous identity and worldview, an important and recurring theme. As a member of our community here, you will begin to develop perspective by examining the historical context of specific government policies and their influences on past and current conditions for Indigenous people. 

This week, you will be introduced to some of the key terminologies of Indigenous Studies, the critical documents foundational to Canada's existence and the differences between Indigenous perspectives and world views and the Western European mindset of Conquest.

You will participate in a discussion forum where you will be required to create an avatar, introduce yourself and discuss some key concepts in the first module. so be sure to get started on the module early. It is important to get to know your classmates because, by the end of week 2, you will sign up to work on a group project. If you have any initial questions post them in the General Questions discussion forum.

Instruction

In this first assignment, you will be doing a number of things.

1. The first step is to create an avatar of yourself. An avatar is an icon or figure representing a particular person. To create your avatar you may use any free avatar maker on the internet, or if you are familiar with computer software that allows you to create an image of yourself you can use that too.
