In this assessment, students are required to individually take 3 photos of settings/ scenes/ scenarios that they encounter in their personal or professional environment that depict exclusionary design according to universal design principles. Students can imagine they were elderly, could not speak, read, or write English, had a disability, or were homeless, etc, and take photos of exclusionary design from this perspective. Discussed in a photo (visual) essay. The photo essay will address the following:
What do the photos depict? Who do they exclude and how? Explore value
or ethical dilemmas raised by the scenario. Describe where the power lies in each of the 3 photos and who holds power to change the exclusionary design scenario. Identify the wider socio-political and contextual issues underpinning the scene depicted in the photo. Provide an inclusive alternative to the scene depicted that would be appropriate and justify why. Use relevant theory and critical reflection to discuss your photos and the scenes they depict. You will need to start by defining universal design principles and use theory to discuss their importance. You also need to show that you reflect critically about your own privilege and personal assumptions around ableism.
Individual Photo Essay:
The photo essay will be marked according to the following criteria:
1. Selection of 3 relevant photos exclusionary design and description of which universal design principles are not upheld
2. Use of appropriate theory to explore exclusionary environmental design depicted in photos.
3. Use of theory to critically reflect on power within the scenes discussed
4. Exploration of value or ethical dilemmas raised by the issues depicted in the photo.
5. Demonstrated ability to provide an environmental design alternative promoting inclusivity and articulate from a theoretical perspective why.
