Background information 
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are often reported to be less attentive to social  information. They are less well able to pick out the right meaning from a social stimulus (e.g., a face,  or a human action), for example, whether someone is happy or sad, interested or not, etc. There is  furthermore evidence that this difficulty in understanding social stimuli is to some degree present  within the typically-developing population, and depends on the number of “autistic traits” someone  has (e.g., van Boxtel & Lu, 2013). van Boxtel & Lu showed that when presented with biological  motion stimuli (i.e., motions of the human body), people with more “autistic traits” processed the  biological motion stimuli less well. “Autistic traits” can be measured with a simple 50-item  questionnaire (called the Autism Quotient; Baron-Cohen, et al, 2001), and, while not a diagnostic  tool, individuals with ASD often have higher Autism Quotients (AQs).  
Individuals with ASD, however, are better than typically-developing people on other tasks, such as  simple motion discrimination tasks (Foss-Feig, et al, 2013). Foss-Feig and colleagues showed that  when they presented a moving stimulus to people, those diagnosed with ASD required less time (i.e.,  a shorter stimulus duration) than those without ASD to correctly identify it as moving leftward or  rightward. This result appears to be in contrast to the findings by van Boxtel & Lu (2013) (and  others), that showed that people with more autistic traits are worse at biological motion tasks. 

This study 
This study aimed to investigate whether individuals with many autism traits will be able to do a  biological motion discrimination task with shorter or longer stimulus durations than individuals with  fewer autism traits. Finding that they can do the task with shorter durations suggests that the 
motion and biological motion tasks are similar and people with many autism traits can do these  tasks better. On the other hand, finding that they need longer durations, suggests biological motion  tasks are indeed more difficult for people with more autism traits, consistent with their reported  problems with processing social stimuli.  
In this study participants from the general population were recruited via the SONA system at the  University of Canberra, from January until May of 2020. Participants were presented biological  motion stimuli on a computer screen (that is, a set of 13 dots, one dot for each of the main joints,  plus the head). The biological motion stimulus could be going to the left or to the right, and have  one of two Types of Action: walking or running. Immediately after viewing each stimulus the  participants were asked to indicate whether they thought the walker/runner was moving leftward or  rightward. The researchers made the stimulus duration shorter (i.e., more difficult) when someone  gave a correct answer, and made it longer when someone gave an incorrect answer. Doing so, the  researchers can determine at what stimulus duration participants answer 75% of the time correctly;  they call this the duration threshold to identify the direction of motion. They calculated this  threshold separately for walking and running actions. The researchers also recorded response time  (in milliseconds), which is the time from the start of the stimulus until the participant presses the  button to indicate whether they saw the action as leftwards or rightwards. 
After the experiment, participants completed the AQ questionnaire (Baron-Cohen, et al, 2001), and  provided demographic information.
