INF30005 - Business Process Management - Maroondah Hospital General Medical Process - Case Study Assessment Answer
Task:

Case Study
Maroondah Hospital General Medical Process(es) (Detailed case description can be found in the Appendix of this document.)
Your Tasks - INF30005
You have been commissioned by your client to analyze their core business process(es). The task includes two stages which you will have 12 weeks to complete. Stage 1 (assignment 1, five weeks), you should provide a review (aimed at the management and staff of the organisation) on:
1. Select and read academic journal papers (more recent and at least 3) related to Business Process Management, process analysis, design and development. You are required to provide an overview of the management on BPM trends, why process analysis, design and development are important to their business.
2. Discuss the current business process(es) and their prospective problems and issues based on your understanding and knowledge. Please note that ‘Do not make any recommendations on how to fix the problems at this stage (stage 1)’.
3. *Present the current process models by using relevant drawing tools (read details below).

If management concurs with your report, they intend to hire you to complete stage 2 (assignment 2 Part 1) which is to make detailed recommendations for improvement.
*To present the current process models (point 3 in stage 1), you should first understand the current process and construct the process models which should include both the main process and sub process models (at least two sub-processes). To construct models, you are required to use any process modelling tools (such as all examples we provided in the unit-
we used Bizagi modeller – a process modelling tool). Bizagi is commonly used in the industry and is specifically for design business processes. It is free software and easy to use. It has a
built-in simulation function which can help to check your designed process models if there are deadlock problems. It also has a built-in function to check error connections of the models. Bizagi is our recommended modelling software. However, as it doesn’t support Mac computers yet, you can choose other process modelling software. However, please make sure it allows you to use all BPMN palettes (pool, lane, tasks, events...). The drawing software selected has to be process-oriented. We have provided some suggested modelling tools in the unit outline; please check. If you select a different BPMN software, please also check with your tutor.

Appendix Case Study: Maroondah Hospital General Medical Process - INF30005
A. Context
Maroondah hospital is located in Ringwood East. It is a metropolitan teaching hospital that provides services including emergency medicine, general and specialist medicine, general and specialist surgery, critical care services, ambulatory and allied health. This case focuses on the General Medical process which is the process that a patient has to go through at a normal hospital. Figure 1 shows the mapping of the workflow model to the knowledge environment of a hospital. Each patient’s visit is considered as a case, which starts with the patient’s admittance and ends when the patient is discharged. Each patient has an individual patient record. The process consists of a series of tasks such as diagnosis, tests and treatments.

The General Medical Process (AS-IS)
The process starts with a receptionist registering the patient at the front desk followed by a schedule planner making an appointment for an initial diagnosis. The diagnosis is carried out by a doctor who will decide what to do with this patient. If the patient does not need any help or cannot be helped, the patient will be released, causing the process to end. If the doctor thinks someone else can further assist the patient, he/she is referred to a doctor with other expertise. If the patient’s symptoms are not clear, the doctor will suggest further tests before drawing any further conclusions.

Therapy - INF30005
It is the doctor’s decision how to proceed. In the case of surgery or radiotherapy another specialist is involved who may consider the therapy as a new case and she might start with a more specific diagnosis process before commencing the therapy.
Since there may be many therapies that can be executed simultaneously we have applied a repeater pattern as in "testing".
Most of the cost will be covered by the Medicare or Private insurances. Out-of-pocket expenses will be invoiced to the patient following their release. Patients have a month to arrange the payment.
