Description 

Research suggests that our beliefs about different gender identities and ethnic groups may be based on subtle elements of the environment that we encounter as children. If this is the case, then our gender and cultural identities may be heavily influenced by films and print media we encounter throughout our lives.

In this assessment task, you will create a 2-minute narrated presentation using a visual PowerPoint presentation to educate parents about the influence of Disney films on a child's cultural development.

Presentation Topics

You need to select 1 topic from the options below.

1. The Parenting Effect. Examine the portrayal of parents' and guardians' roles in a Disney film and explain how such portrayal may influence a child's attachment development.

2. Self identity: Using Walt Disney films, you need to consider a Disney character and how the portrayal of the character's role in the film may influence a child's formation of self-identity.

3. Understanding of the elderly: Examine the role of an elderly character in a Disney film and how the character may influence a child's understanding of ageing and the elderly.
For your chosen presentation topics, consider the portrayal of Disney film characters and what they teach their young audience. Then, explain how this additional knowledge can influence a child's development using one of the following developmental theories:

• Psychoanalytic theory-this includes attachment theory
• Social cognitive theory
• Cognitive developmental theory- this includes information processing theory

When creating your two-minute multimedia presentation, be sure to address the following tasks:

1. Your starting point is to decide which topic will be the focus of your multimedia presentation. For all three topics, you need to consider at least one Disney (or Disney-Pixar) film character to illustrate your answer. You should especially highlight how the character portrayals in the films will influence the relevant development of their intended child audience.

2. Conduct research on your topic to prepare your presentation - 2 minutes of narrative equates to about 300 words. Although your textbook is a useful place to start, you will need to cast your research to theories and studies from peer-reviewed journals to demonstrate an evidence-based production.
3. Source or create appropriate images for your visual powerpoint presentation-note that multiple images can be inserted into one slide.

4. Construct your visual presentation using the following points as a guide in relation to the layout of your submission:

a. Your presentation slides should not be text heavy, making optimal use of visuals to illustrate your ideas. There should be additional slides for your reference. In-text citations are also required throughout your presentation. 

b. Your videos should be created and recorded in Panopto, as instructed on LearnJCU. Once recorded, you will need to upload your presentation by following the steps provided on LearnJCU. Please see the Instructional Video "How to record and submit your Multimedia Production" for more details. Your presentation needs to be no longer than 2 minutes and should be recorded in one go without stopping (i.e. there should be no editing post-recording). Your marker will stop watching your presentation at 2 minutes and 12 seconds, and anything delivered beyond this point will not be marked.

c. You must submit the video and a copy of your PowerPoint. Please attach the video and slides in the box that appears in the LearnJCU portal at the time of submission. Instructions on how to attach the video and slides can be found on LearnJCU and in the instructional video.

d. All images must be appropriately acknowledged and sourced. Remember to check the rules on Copyright regarding the use of images.
