Highlights
INDIVIDUAL
This is an open design brief with a creative challenge to align form to data. Working individually you will create
1) Portfolio of information designs for online exhibition . This comprises an engaging and compelling graphic or video depicting 2+ information designs for a topic, data and project concept of your choice and research, and as agreed with your tutor. The installation will be supported by the Pinterest platform 2) Design document - explaining your rationale for the project and a 'form-data' concept you developed, technical interpretation of the data and listing the data you researched. The designs tell a ‘story’ about a single topic of your choice. You will develop 2 or more data designs and embed these into an online exhibition submission. One of the data designs must be either a physical exploration of data which you have photographed or video'd; or it must facilitate interaction directly with the data. Your creative challenge is to align form to data, where the physical or interactive form meaningfully relates to the data, evoking it directly. This means that, if working with a physical visualisation outcome, for example - visualise data about food/eating with baked goods; data about homelessness with crocheted beanies for distribution to the homeless as part of a 'designed' social media awareness campaign alongside informative infographics; visualise data about sustainability with timelapse photography (a video) of seedlings growing across a world map “garden” (These last 2 examples are in the Parsons paper). Or, alternatively, if you are working with an interactive visualisation outcome, ensure that interaction design changes the data being shown i.e. the visualisation updates its form interactively; while also using imagery that relates meaningfully to the data. Specific instructions
1. RESEARCH Begin by brainstorming a topic and finding your own data – you will need to do research here. Find 2 or more datasets. Manipulate as needed, maintaining accuracy and integrity. Draw on your skills in data manipulation & story ideation to explore it and project elements: data, topic, context, audience, and information design principles, and to come up with a guiding rationale.
2. DESIGN. For the PORTFOLIO of DESIGNS you must create an engaging and compelling graphic or video for exhibition that embodies your portfolio of 2+ data designs, with:
? Minimum one design that is either physical or interactive, which you can photograph/video or otherwise embed in your final exhibition piece for Pinterest.
? Minimum one design with high data density such as a multivariate, also integrated into the exhibition submission
? Choice & creation of visual form that relates to the data
? Be created using iterative design methods.
? Be visually engaging for online exhibition
? Note - the online exhibition submission could reasonably be an infographic with photographic
