Assignment Task:

Scenario

You have recently been hired as a consultant to undertake a cybersecurity risk assessment for a small legal firm that employs approximately ten people: two partners / directors, three senior lawyers, two junior lawyers, one paralegal, a legal secretary and an administrative assistant. The office is situated in the Adelaide CBD and their IT infrastructure is located on premise. They have contracted an IT services company to maintain and administer their IT environment. The law firm specialises in medical claims and cases and their clients include individuals, pharmacies, GPs and hospitals.

An event has occurred which means staff are no longer able to work at the office. The IT services company are implementing arrangements so that all staff can continue their work from home. They have proposed that the following services be implemented to facilitate remote working:

• A VPN service to allow staff to use their personal computers to connect to corporate file shares.

• A public cloud videoconferencing solution to support communication between staff and with clients.

• An enterprise level remote desktop solution for staff who need to remotely use specialist applications on computers that remain onsite.

• ‘Lights out management’ facilities to allow the IT services company to manage the organisation’s servers remotely.

• A new web server and web application that allows staff to send and receive confidential documents to/from clients securely.

The directors are concerned about the security implications of this change and they have asked you to urgently undertake an independent risk assessment so they can understand the risks and address security concerns to the extent possible. You are required to conduct a preliminary security risk assessment in relation to this initiative and to prepare a report for the directors. The report will provide an assessment of the cybersecurity risks in relation to the initiative with appropriate recommendations, focussing on the most important and relevant risks. The report should also identify techniques that could be used to undertake a more in-depth risk assessment in the future. These techniques should be selected from IEC/ISO 31010 (International Standard 2019) and justification must be provided for the selection of each technique.

The directors are generally risk averse and their level of computer literacy is quite low. The report will be shared with the IT services company to inform and guide their implementation of the IT services identified above.
