QUESTION 1
Digital Transformation Consultants (DTC) delivers a range of consultancy services to its customers in Australia. DTC headquarter is in Sydney and has branches in all
Australian states.
The company employs various experts in a range of fields. Each employee has a unique Employee ID. Other attributes associated with the employee include first name,
last name, gender, address, telephone (landline and/or mobile), personal address, date of birth, and the person an employee reports to.
Employees could be employed on a long-term basis (full-time or part-time) or on a contract basis. Each employee works in one department only and it can possess a
number of skills.
Each employee is assigned to a job class (e.g., Manager, Administrative, Information Technology, etc.). Each of the job classes has a different salary.
The Information Technology (IT) employees have an additional attribute called University Degree, and the year when it is obtained. Some employees in the IT Department have an additional attribute called TAFE Certification, and the date the certificate is issued. You can assume that DTC has to record this extra information only
if the employee is in that job class.
For administrative purposes, DTC is divided into departments (IT, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, etc.) headed by department managers. Each department has a
Department ID and other attributes, such as Department Name, Department Description, and Manager ID.
Each of the projects is carried-out in an inter-disciplinary way; i.e. for each project a project team is selected, grouping employees from different departments, and a Project Manager (also an employee of the company) is appointed who is entirely and exclusively responsible for the control of the project, quite independently of the
company's hierarchy. The following is a brief statement of some facts and policies adopted by the company:
- A department may participate in none/one/many projects.
- At least one department participates in a project.
- Project teams consist of at least one member.
- An employee may be engaged in none/one/many projects.
DTC has a number of branches in Australia. Each office can employ people in different departments. Each branch would hold at least one receptionist and another employee who belongs to a department. All receptionists belong to the Administration Departments. Some offices hold employees in all departments, while others do not
hold employees in all the departments (e.g., Perth’s office might not have employees belonging to the Finance Department).
Each branch can be identified by a Branch ID. A branch also has other attributes like branch location name (e.g., Perth Branch), address, etc.
For each of the branches, DTS has different types of rooms. A room can be defined as an office room, a meeting room, or other room (e.g. stationary room, kitchen, etc.). If it is an office room, it has an additional attribute called Room Telephone (e.g., +61 2 9999 9999). If it is a meeting room, it has attributes of layout and occupancy. Some
meeting rooms could have Audio Visual (AV) facilities; those have attributes related to the AV facilities in that room.
Each customer is identified by a Customer ID. It has other attributes like the Customer Business Name, Location, Business Type (private, government, non-profit, etc.). Each customer would have one or more representatives from their end. The project manager of each project is the representative from the DTC side.
Each project is identified by a unique sequential and incremental project ID. A Project has other attributes like project description, estimate cost, date of signed contract,
starting date, date of delivery, etc.
Required:
With reference to the above case, please answer all of the following questions:
a) Using Chen’s notation to create an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) that provides a suitable model based on the above business rules. You can state your assumptions, but they must be reasonable.
b) Due to Covid-19, some business rules have changed. When a business rule changes, it might change one or more of the entities in the ERD in order to accommodate the changes. Based on the above scenario, give two examples on how a change to the business rule will have an impact on the ERD, and with the aid of a diagram(s) how would you modify your entity(ies) to accommodate the changes
