This assignment provides you with an opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of the nature and historical context of Indigenous health, as a basis for ongoing nursing care planning and evaluation.

Task

Write an annotated bibliography of THREE peer-reviewed journal articles that explore the impact of colonisation on ONE aspect of Indigenous health or wellbeing. Then, synthesise what you have learned in a broader discussion.

Annotated Bibliography 

Develop a question

Owing to the large number of studies available on this topic, you will need to narrow the scope of your search, and consider your search terms carefully.
To achieve this, it will be necessary for you to develop a specific question that will focus your literature search.

Use this format:

Question: What does the literature say about how the impact of colonisation influences xxxxx (First Nations people health or wellbeing issue)?

Undertake a search of the literature

Guided by your question, evaluate the articles and identify three that inform your understanding.
Articles must be peer reviewed and published within the last five to ten years.

Develop your annotated bibliography

Your annotated bibliography must include:

• The title of your paper (Your question)

• Three annotations (400 words each) one for each article

Each annotation must include:

Full reference details (not counted in word count)
Paragraph 1: Summary of key outcomes in your own words (200 words)
Paragraph 2: Analysis of how findings inform your topic (200 words)

Discussion 

Using essay format and with close reference to the literature in part (a) and any other relevant literature, develop an integrated discussion addressing:

• What do the articles say that is similar or different?

• How do they contribute to understanding the topic?

• What avenues exist for further enquiry?

• How can this knowledge inform nursing practice?

Summary of Assessment Requirements

This assessment requires students to demonstrate an understanding of how colonisation has shaped the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The task is divided into two major components:
