Unit Description:


This unit introduces students to the theory and practice of effective communication. It is designed to enable students develop effective and high-level communication in a range of settings. A range of topics will be covered within this unit, including, reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving as a foundation for working in academic and professional settings. It will examine the fundamental nature of effective communication and the perception, attitudes, values, cultural issues and social barriers that can complicate the communication processes. Students will develop practical skills including listening and non-verbal communication, conflict resolution and reflective skills. Furthermore, students will gain skills in effective communication for working with diverse cultural groups and communicating with Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander peoples. The unit aims to increase students’ practical skills in interpersonal communication to enable and nurture therapeutic relationships.

 

Learning Outcomes:

The course learning outcomes for the Bachelor of Community Services course are designed to align  with the Australian Quality Framework specifications for Bachelor’s degrees (AQF Level 7).

Assessment 1: Written Response to a Journal Article / Textbook Content (10%)  Word limit – 300-400 words.

This assessment is designed to help you develop the foundational knowledge of communication skills. 

 

Assessment 2 Written Assessment (15%) 

Word Count: 800-1000 words 

The goal of this assessment is to test your knowledge and comprehension of conflict resolution in  community services.  

During Week 5 you will be given the opportunity to complete the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode  Questionnaire. 

After completing the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Questionnaire you will watch a video and respond  to the questions listed below plus write a role play using an appropriate conflict resolution style.

 

Assessment 2 - Instructions
