The purpose of your writing
It is critical when undertaking a significant piece of written work that you clearly understand its’ purpose before you start to write. If you are not clear on what you are aiming to achieve then your purpose will likely be unclear to readers. Examiners and markers often lament that a article may be technically well written, with good support from scholarly evidence, but is
overly descriptive and does not actively respond to the question or problem that needs to be addressed. The purpose of your writing will generally not be singular in focus, but rather seek to achieve several important objectives.
When you write your research article you can draw on the marking criteria to identify appropriate aims for this assessment. Four of these criteria are restated below (the fifth relates to your peer-review mark):
? Demonstrate emerging knowledge of the underlying principles, concepts and broader contexts of the topic considered by critically analysing the relevant law in its application to the factual scenarios in the case study.
? Demonstrate knowledge of the law of IHL and the ability to apply critical legal reasoning and research skills in a creative and appropriate response to the case study.
? Demonstrate legal thinking skills, understanding of legal mechanisms by identifying and articulating principles and issues; use appropriate legal and other materials and apply legal reasoning to engage in critical analysis.
? Develop and communicate in written form clearly and succinctly using effective, appropriate and persuasive communication skills by producing a well-researched publishable quality journal article that follows the nominated journals writing and referencing requirements.
