What is the ideal class size for student's interaction and engagement to produce better outcomes?
The debate on class size is still going all over the world, for the last three decades. According to the data collected by the OECD'S indicating that the class size of Australian schools is 14 percent greater than the international class average in 2019. Especially in primary schools, the strength of the class changed from 21 to 24, which means three students per class raised. Parents, teachers, and the public say that the Australian classes are oversized or crowded, so they prefer smaller class sizes. "The reality is that we're teaching a group of individuals who all have their own special needs and not all those needs are being met," Di Wilcox, education and parenting expert, told 9News( 2019). South Australian teachers want to change class size from 30 to 20( Lesley parker 2008). According to Handal, Maher, and Watson(2015), private schools attracting parents who could afford money for their children by advertising smaller class sizes. They further said that “ What matters is the actual number of students in a classroom or the quality of the teaching being delivered”. Is a class containing 24 students oversized?. If that is oversized, what would be the ideal size class for student engagement and learning?
Research studies said that not only class size but also many other factors are associated with pupil learning. Wang, Haertel, and Walberg found nearly 28 different variables, which are related to student learning. On the other hand, Handal, Maher, and Watson (2015) found five factors from their research, conducting on five years test results of Naplan. Five factors that influence student achievement are gender, class size, Non-English speaking background, calendar year of testing conditions, community or socio-educational advantage that influence student learning. Other research studies found teacher quality, student ability, grade level, resources, pedagogical methods further influence student learning. The research will focus to find on how class size is related to different variables to provide good student results. This research will provide significant information of qualitative data from the analysis of different studies. According to Professor Alan Reid from the University of South Australia Contends that there is a basic misapprehension in the “teacher quality”/cost-benefit argument. There are seen as independent variables separate to other factors such as class sizes and resources whereas the research shows that “ it is the interrelationship of the variables in the context of the learning which is important”
The focus of the research: The focus of the research is to investigate the relation between class size with different factors such as teacher quality, performance grades, long-term success, student ability, and the satisfaction of students, parents, and teachers, and budget factor to the schools.
Literature review:
Relation between class size and academic performance:
Research shows that students in a smaller class perform greater in all subjects and assignments than their peers from larger classes. Another research further reveals that there is a direct relationship between student performance and non-cognitive skills. Dee and West, (2011) found that reduction in class size can improve student's non-cognitive skills. This is because of interaction between a teacher-student, student-student, motivation, more time to get feedback from the teacher, higher level of interest, lower levels of boredom. According to the Dee and West analysis, a student can perform better and succeed with improved non-cognitive skills. Many research projects such as STAR and SAGE support the smaller classes in primary levels. Other researchers said that students improved in their reading and numeracy skills in their early stages, that basic skills would help in their further studies. Many articles provided mixed results about the class size and recommended in lower classes but not preferred to gifted students and higher-level classes. However, the reduction in class size has many advantages that are not constant across all levels of education.
Relation between grade level, class size, and student performance:
Smaller classes can give a huge difference in primary classes, while do not give much difference in a higher level of education and for gifted students. However, for non-English speaking background, socio-economic background, who needs special help, smaller classes can enhance better outcomes. Filges, Sonne-Scmidt, and Nelson (2018) provided evidence from their meta-analysis, for the effect of reduction in class size on students out-put, but that effect is very small. In another research(James, Alice, & Zachary (2020) recommended a reduction in class size for elementary students, from their research as the average class size increase, elementary school performance results tend to decrease, but middle school performance scores tend to increase. David Zinger (2014) found a relationship between class size and student achievement from his meta-analysis of the 112 papers. He further suggested that the class with less than 20 students would give stronger benefits to minority groups as well as disadvantaged children in their primary level. Many research projects such as STAR and SAGE support the smaller classes in primary levels.
According to David Zinger, the need for smaller classes for specific subjects such as numeracy and literacy as well as a grade level in every school. While the evidence on whether extra years in small classes lead to greater academic achievement gains is equivocal. A topic that has yet to be answered is how long a student should stay in a small class before moving on to a larger class.
Relation between Classroom engagement and student performance:
The research on small class and student engagement found that specifically in smaller classes teacher has fewer discipline problems and more time to engage students. In addition to that, teachers in a small class, identify student’s needs and make different plans to keep them on track or to fill the performance gap. “student voice”—to argue for student involvement in the shaping of curriculum, pedagogy,
and assessment as well as wider school decisions (Baroutsis, McGregor, & Mills, 2016; Zyngier,2007).In this program, students from SES ( Socio-Economic Status) and who need extra help were highly benefited. Moreover, SES students will continue their higher education, as a result, they will get long-term benefits. According to studies, class size reduction has an impact on socioeconomic factors such as earning potential, citizenship, criminality, and welfare dependency. Finn and his colleagues by analysing STAR data found that the students who had been in smaller classes in the four years of the STAR experiment they are 80 percent more likely to graduate than their peers from the larger class. They also found that students who came from low-income families who spent three years in smaller classes in the early grades were 67% more likely to graduate from high school than their peers in a larger class. The benefits are greater for people who are underrepresented and disadvantaged. Shin(2012) found that from his research, Black students got more benefits than any other ethnic group from the smaller classes. Which is based on the first, second, and third-grade student's academic grades.
Relation between Quality of teaching and student performance:
Even though having many advantages from small class size, sometimes teacher quality is considered as a crucial determinant in pupils' academic progress. Early studies said that there is a considerable relation between class size, student's attitudes, instructions as well as teachers. Recruiting effective teachers and retention of teachers is significant to the school, to ensure better student test results, which is internally related to class size. Reduction in class size needs to hire new teachers to engage same classes, but they are not as effective as already existed teachers. AS a result, it will affect student learning. C. Sapelli and G. Illanes (2016) provided the data, the effect of new teachers, and class size. They further mentioned that the average impact of first-time teachers is -0.41 standard deviation. “a first-time teacher is substantially worse than infra-marginal teachers”. They also mentioned there is a considerable risk in hiring a new teacher. According to Mark Barret(2018) “ some school officials in western North Carolina and elsewhere say it may be difficult to find enough qualified teachers to meet the mandate and some school systems do not have enough classrooms”. One could conclude that the experienced, full-time faculty can adapt their teaching such that class size has no independent factor on the favourability of their ratings”(Hamilton,1980). Extensive research evidence confirms that teacher quality is the most important factor in improving outcomes for students(Dinham & Rowe, 2007: D, Hargreaves, 1994: Hattie,2003). Both new and experienced teachers must be trained on how to deal with a small class.
cLearning is the process of active interaction, in this process how teachers teach, how students connect with their teacher, what students do are also important. Hence the quality of teaching and learning provision is most significant. The researches say only qualified teacher is not just enough to enhance outstanding performance, without changing desired pedagogical strategies effectively, according to the smaller class. By considering many articles and research on class size, there is a research gap between teaching methods used by teachers, curriculum, and the type of methods to the evolution of student knowledge. “ Majority teachers who said they changed their teaching strategies when teaching a small class were unable to articulate the small class teaching strategies they used”( Boris Handal, Marguerite Maher, and Kevin Watson( 2015). I found that there is no research on what teaching strategies are used by teachers in a small class. ( How they allotted time for engaging small groups, large groups, and individual engagement)
If the class size is too small
Everyone thinks smaller classes mean a personalized or conversational approach and shape student learning. Smaller classrooms were highly participatory and students will have opportunities to get to know their peers. However, they have some issues such as attendance, fewer activity options, increased student anxiety, fewer viewpoints. To conduct certain activities minimum students are required, so it is not possible to conduct those activities in a smaller class. Students will get lesser viewpoints and less time to complete their work than their peers in a large size class. As a result, students will feel anxiety sometimes. Some instructors mentioned that some classes are too small for student's interaction and engagement. According to Mary, Inger, and Tracy(2019), a world language coordinator noted that because student’s “personalities shine so much individually” in a reduced size class “more tensions are created”. Some studies revealed that it is difficult for teaching with fewer initial enrolments or learners may be dropped from the course, mid-way through the academic year in the class of 18 students. Which would cause a below level of class strength. “ Five or six really timid students in a group of eighteen, it’s hard to pull those students out of their shells” ( Mary, Inger, and Tracy, 2019). Additional research needs to measure learner’s satisfaction in small classes.
Budget factor to the schools:
Parents want to put their children in a class with fewer pupils, similarly, teachers want a fewer number of pupils in their class to engage. But on the other side policymakers raise their voice to increase the class size to reduce spending money on education. In this way reducing class size would be a significant problem to many public schools because of suffering under budget. Smaller classes mean schools need to build new infrastructure which means renovation or construction and must be hired, new educators. The reduction in class size is costly so schools may cut some funds to the extra curriculum activities such as music, sports, and arts. It would be the biggest problem to the learners other than class size because, sports, music, and arts have much importance like other subjects. On the other hand, private schools are attracting affordable parents because of providing smaller classes. Class size is a significant matter to the people who are in low and medium-income and sending their children to the public schools. Though the government has willing to spend money on processing smaller classes, research produced a mixed result of learner's performance. There is no research, the impact of using playgrounds in a school for the construction of a new classroom.
Methodology:
The data collected for this research is from google -scholars and through some published online resources, which were relevant for the research proposal. Google scholars provide much more reliable and credible sources, compared to secondary resources, that improve my research proposal. Those collected articles having data from the year1979 to 2020. For the literature review, I have searched for nearly 40 to 50 articles and I selected 25 latest articles, for my research proposal. The methodology used for this research will be in-depth systematic qualitative analysis. This research aims to show class size has the least importance than other factors. Similarly producing ideal class size for better engagement and learning.
