1. Discuss the key issues that emerge from that media coverage in approximately 800 words, including: 
a. Describing what the issue is about; 
b. Any major incidents and issues covered in the media reporting; 
c. Key perspectives or messages from the media coverage, either in the same source or  across different sources, including headlines, quotes or pictures that reflect a particular  angle or value judgment about the issue. 
2. Discuss the extent to which the media influence public opinion of, and responses to,  your chosen topic, and the role of political actors in this process. This component  should amount to approximately 1200 words and include: 
a. Any opinions of key justice ‘experts’ interviewed for these media items;  b. How political actors and authority figures have responded to the issue or problem – i.e. what key messages have been delivered?  
c. Whether any policies or changes have been introduced (if there are none, then be  explicit about this, but if there is discussion of a range of possible policy responses,  then address this too). Also consider whether there is any criminological evidence that  comments on the utility and/or merits of these policies/responses. 
d. A combination of at least 5 academic and/or policy references to support issues  raised from your media analysis, including research that might comment on the effectiveness of, or problems with, policy responses that are proposed in the media  you discuss; and 
e. A discussion of how your media analysis suggests that the policy or issues will address the target problem you are examining, and whether these responses are likely  to be effective and why?

For this Task, your focus is on media which is considered ‘factual’, and news reports  about real events or issues, including opinion and commentary which often swirls around  particularly shocking or troubling events. You can obtain this either from mainstream  print/online sources, or via social media posts. The idea is to improve your skills in media  analysis and tie these into broader policy-based discussions that are common within our  discipline. 
You can choose any medium – television, newspapers, radio, internet sites, social media – or  a combination of media. You should reference all media you have consulted and used for this  assessment. Just as we have intentionally kept the topic themes broad, you can be selective  with your identification of particular media relating to an issue that fits within your topic.  
• If you are interested in covering a particular case that fits within one of the subheadings  and generates the need to consider better crime prevention policies, you might choose to  look at how that case was covered by the Herald Sun in a four week period after its  occurrence.  
• Or, you might compare and contrast how the case was reported by many different media  in the following two days. 
• Or, you might compare how a Melbourne media outlet and a Sydney media outlet  covered a similar case. 
• One news report about a minor drug conviction in the Geelong Advertiser is not  substantial enough to reward analysis, but considering how several convictions for similar  offences were covered over a period of a few weeks could be an excellent focus for deeper  policy analysis. 
You are strongly advised to look to other sources to help you interpret the wider media and criminological contexts of the media coverage you are examining, including the set text, which will help inform your analysis.
