The shockwave launched one unfortunate taxi into the air like a projectile, defying the laws of gravity. As the ground quivered from the underground force, vehicles were thrown off course, careening into nearby buildings with an impact that shattered glass and sent pedestrians fleeing for cover. How does a college or university not just give students a basic background in the mathematical and natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, but also cultivate the habits of mind that will help these students continue to pursue and interconnect all three areas regardless of career choice? Students today and in the future need to take charge of their own learning, be able to think critically, work together, use advanced problem-solving skills for real-life issues, handle cultural differences, and make connections between different subjects. According to several authors, a truly integrative teaching and learning experience should be built around the investigation of a single issue or problem – which is what we are currently piloting with this project.
