Use SOLIDWORKS sheet metal modeling tools to model a metal box. The box must have a connected lid that
stays down when closed on the body of the box. The box should be no bigger than 4” x 4” x 4” when folded with
the lid closed. Material thickness should be 3/16”. You are expected to use bend relief cuts and those should be
visible in your flat pattern. You will submit an isometric view of the folded box and a fully-dimensioned drawing
of your flat pattern, both from your SOLIDWORKS model.
You will then find a piece of cardboard and, using your pattern, make the box. Take a photo of the flat cardboard
pattern and a photo of the folded box for your writeup. Refer to the sheet metal design guide on D2L for tips
and use your research skills to look up sheet metal pattern tutorials online.
Titanium sheet is available to make your physical box. If used, you need to discuss required design changes in
your writeup that deal with the thinner material compared to the 3/16” thickness used in your SOLIDWORKS
model.
