What do you feel is the role of the public anthropologist?

Didier Fassin is an anthropologist and sociologist who has played role as ethnographer of urban policing in France. He also has enhanced his field of research which include critical moral anthropology such as analyzing historical, social and political significance of moral forms involved in everyday action and discernment. His recents ethnography research basically based on police which specialist as anti crime squads. Other than that, he come up with social sciences issues about reliability and social inequalities to public arguments and perspectives.

First and foremost based on his research regarding why ethnography matters has been clarify briefly about the role of public anthropologist. Usually public anthropologists attempt to find a form of writing that could be approachable over the academic circles which include finding ethnography analyzed issues in terms of critical thinking so their findings can be appropriated, contested,apprehended and utilized. Probably, public anthropologists check out the topics which are more suitable to public awareness and controversy among the people. It’s important to anthropologist to concerning about ethnography for the contemporary societies and survey in particular questions which related to publics. Sometimes, anthropologists interfere in the public sphere without qualifying their attempt and step into disagreement over the legitimacy of public social sciences. There are also public anthropologists who conduct their research regarding the problems that emerge from the encounter between ethnography and the public. Others might be discounting numerous similar efforts such as collective and editorial. Public anthropologist have most of their time to collaborate and work relationship with the media because they need to adapt their discourse to journalist and social scientists about requested format and intervene on their final product before publication their case study. Furthermore, he mentioned clearly in his article that public anthropologist have a role to respond to the media such as acted as a specific intellectual in the sense that he restricted his public expression to a topic that he have read up for several years and writing about the urban policing. He situated the diversity forms of police deviance within the trend observed during past decades which is characterized by public action towards the unprivileged neighborhood from welfare to repression in context of growing socioeconomic inequalities. Public anthropologists such as Didier Fassin will not address general issues of social justice and even more broadly and the way they discussed France violates social contract between citizens when law enforcement mainly serves to enforce an unequal social order. Moreover, they also overlook the classic method which leaving aside works conducted from a historic genealogical perspective, specialization a scientific domain by establishment of long term relation with officers to get information and reduced initiative of the researchers to conduct more empirical investigation and rarely attempt to conduct fieldwork that came across against the obstruction of authorities. In addition, public anthropologists don't see interviewing as a method in their case study and rather they collect data through participation observation. They simply spend time with people and have a conversation with them such as asking questions and they also utilize people to study about other people. By direct observation, participation and conversations anthropologist able to provide more comprehensive information and details rather than other researchers and journalists.Anthropologist build up trust with people to understand their situation without being biased and loyal to both side. Public anthropologist also provide justification towards action that racial discrimination, provocation and moral violence. In conclusion, to play a possible role anthropologist always contributed themselves to give a social changes and made a political decision. Public anthropologists courageously engage conditions of violence, inequality, injustice and conduct ways which can assist public awareness and have an impact over the academic. Thus, they also put more priorities towards society than themselves. They are able to understand people’s lives and make changes in their lives as well. As anthropology students we should appreciate their contribution towards society and have the same purpose as them to prevent our society from problems in future.
