Scenario
You are working in the management team of Logistics Ltd in the capacity of the Head of Operations. The company is located 10km away from Colombo port in a suburb of Colombo. and planning to expand the logistics operations in the region by bringing a new brand of fertilizer. As per the estimates, Logistics Ltd is planning to increase its warehouse capacity by another 30,000 CBM in the same location where they are now since the required land space is available. The current location has 60ft wide road access and an abandoned railway line to the existing warehouse. A part of the railway line is currently occupied by city dwellers with illegal constructions. Inbound and outbound handling will be 60% and 40 % of the storage. The number of pallet locations in the new facility will be 20,000. The board of directors has asked you to submit a preliminary report on the new project, covering the following tasks.
Task
1. Critically analyze and evaluate the suitability of the existing location. Assuming the goods stored are palletized and the shape of the building is rectangular, propose a suitable layout for the new warehouse. You are required to analyze and evaluate how the proposed warehouse layout is improving productivity and reducing the business’s operational costs.
2. Considering the context of the Colombo environment, critically analyze and explain the transport management systems (models) for the proposed warehouse. Also, assuming that you are handing finished goods in the proposed facility, suggest and explain an inventory management model. Give the justification for your suggestion. Process flow charts for the proposed systems should be produced.
3. Analyze and propose and evaluate the features of an ERP solution and technologies that need to be in place to manage the inventory, warehouse, and transport operations.
