  • Background to this assessment The decision on a distribution or supply chain network can be influenced by factors that often constrain an organisation’s ability to adapt and potentially grow, for example, decisions based on budget limitations could introduce inefficiencies in process however in contrast buying the “newest and best” technology may result in higher and longer-term fixed costs and may even lead to bottlenecks in the operation. The balance of achieving a “fit for purpose” Warehouse/Distribution process can be critical to continued success, highlighting the need to stay abreast of options available in the market and always considering customer trends.
  • Instructions Instruction:
  • You are a co-owner of a fast-growing Startup. Based on your experience in the industry, you have been asked to design a warehouse and consider the necessary inclusions (i.e., internal processes and mode of operating) for the facility.
  • Prepare a written proposal for your fellow owners that includes:
  • The theories and principles that influenced your ‘design’,
  • The emerging trends you will cater for and why, and
  • The internal processes and technologies included considering how the warehouse/DC will operate. Processes should be considered from the point of inventory arriving at the facility to the loading of a truck for delivery.
  • Choose one of the following to base your proposal on:
  • An online distributor of top-end brand name sports clothing, shoes and accessories, or
  • A wholesale distributor of food products: include a description of the types of foods you have chosen, or
  • An online stationary distributor - ranging from pens to home office equipment.
  • Guidelines:
  • The report should be exploratory in nature and include an Introduction to the report (purpose and content); a Discussion that briefly describes your chosen industry, provides an analysis of relevant issues from literature and their application to inventory and warehouse management in your chosen industry, and links this to relevant emerging trends. A Conclusion should provide an evaluation of the findings from your analysis of the literature in the Discussion and provide a clear answer to the report question.
  • This should be a scholarly assessment on research drawn from relevant high-quality research and industry literature on logistics and supply chain management. This includes a discussion on the processes, measures and technology chosen for inventory and warehouse management, and relevant emerging trends in your chosen industry.
  • Consider literature that can inform and improve or change current practices and explain how the information from literature may have an influence on transportation and distribution management practices. These will be obtained from library databases and professional industry journals.
