Assignment Task:

Aims and background:
This coursework enables the student to experience, understand, interpret, and analyze the laboratory experiments including their results involved in Civil Engineering Materials. The students will conduct experiments that investigate the characteristics of Civil Engineering Materials including the use of hardware for the corresponding tests. The assignment (CW2) is developed to complete the learning outcomes 3 and 4 of this module.

Module learning outcomes assessed by this coursework:
On successful completion of this assignment, students will be expected, at the threshold level, to be able to:

LO1: Identify and classify typical hardware used in engineering, their purpose, characteristics, and the materials from which they are made.

LO2: Introduction to typical hardware applications in engineering.

Tasks:
To produce a portfolio report of 1000 ± 100 words, based on laboratory experiments carried out during the laboratory works covering the following contents:

Part 1: Sieve analysis of aggregates (Laboratory experiment)

Part 2: Specific gravity of coarse and fine aggregates (Laboratory experiment)

Part 3: Slump and compressive strength tests of concrete (Desktop study or discussions).

Parts 1 and 2 of the portfolio report must explain, interprets, discuss and analyses the overall procedures and results, which general contents should address the following tasks (Please refer to Table 1 for more detail assessment components):

  •  Briefly discuss the aim/objectives, and theoretical background of the tests.
  •  Briefly provide the procedure and equipment/apparatus/hardware utilized in the experiments.
  •  Produce analyses and discussions of the results of the experiments, accompanied by the related diagrams, pictures, tables, figures, calculations, etc.
  •  Discuss the link between the experimental results with the related theories.

Part 3 of the report should cover the following topics (Refer to Table 2 for the assessment component):

3 (a). Discussion and explanation of the hardware (equipment) used in the Slump and compressive strength tests of concrete.

3 (b) Discussions and explanation of the concrete parameters (characteristics) obtained from Slump and compressive strength tests of concrete.
