4  General guidelines for preparation of coursework:

a) All work must be word-processed.

b) Document margins should not be more than 2.5cm or less than 1.5cm.

c) Font size in the range of 11 to 14 point distributed to include headings and body text. Preferred typeface to be of a common standard such as Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman for the main text.

c) All work completed including any software constructed may not be used for any purpose other than the purpose of intended study without prior written permission from St Patrick’s College.

Task 1 [AC 1.1, 1.2 ]

a. (i) Explain with the aid of a diagram(s) TCP/IP Architecture.  
(ii) Give your reasons why TCP/IP is the preferred architectural model for IP Networks. 

b. (i) Identify the key applications of IP Networks. 
(ii) Critically analyse these applications   
Task 2 
Creative Communications Ltd has an office with 5 departments; Finance, Marketing, Sales, IT, and HR.
The number of computers to be networked will not exceed 75.

a. Identify and analyse the key structure and features of IPv4 addressing protocol
b. Design an IPv4 addressing scheme  for each department using classful addressing OR  classless subnetting

Task 3 [ AC 3.1, 3.2 M1, M3, D1, D3]
STP Ltd is considering the implementation of IPv6 Protocol throughout the organisation. Produce a report (maximum 1200 words) for the Technical Director highlighting and discussing the key issues in migrating from IPv4 to IPv6 addressing. Include relevant diagrams in your report.

The report should;
a. Briefly explain the principles of IPv6 protocol
b. Discuss the benefits and drawbacks in migrating from IPv4 to IPv6
c. Explain and evaluate alternative transition mechanisms
d. Analyse and evaluate the improvement in quality of service (QoS) and security due to the adoption of IPv6.
Task 4 [ AC 4.1, 4.2 M3, D1, D3]

a. In a  Group of 3- 4 students;
Prepare a 20-minute PowerPoint Presentation to give to your student colleagues with the title;

THE ALL IP NETWORK

Your Presentation should include an analysis of IP based technologies; VoIP, MPLS, Mobile IP, The ALL IP Network

b. Provide a brief INDIVIDUAL analysis (250- 300 words) of the factors to be considered for the implementation of an all IP network.

Assessment Guidelines

Each Unit will be graded as a Pass, Merit, Distinction, Referred or Withheld

A Pass is awarded for the achievement of all Learning Outcomes against the specified Assessment Criteria.

A Merit or Distinction is awarded for higher level achievement.

If not all Learning Outcomes have been achieved the coursework is Referred.

• Adopt and correctly use a  recognised referencing scheme e.g. Harvard Referencing
