QUESTION FOCUS/TOPIC: Compare Al Ghazel’s method for treatment of disease of the heart (through actions) with one other scholar.
TASK:
Presentation and Discussion
Your lecturer will provide you with a list of questions to choose from. Each student in that seminar must choose a different question. Please note that there will be a variety of questions to choose from. You are expected to present your presentation via Zoom.
Questions will be related to the module topics covered in weeks 3 to 12. Depending on the question you choose, you will present the week that the topic is covered in the seminar. Your presentation is expected to take 10 minutes and you will then need to answer specific questions asked by the lecturer as well as your peers and continue the discussion for another 5 minutes.
Students must provide proper referencing in accordance with the Chicago Style 16th edition, by including direct links to all online sources and specifying exact page numbers for any cited material, including paraphrased content. Please note that sources will be randomly verified by the marker to ensure academic integrity. As per the marking rubric, significant marks will be deducted if page numbers or links are missing or improperly cited.
Choose a topic you are comfortable with or one that you want to explore further.
Ensure your answer directly addresses the set question without diverting into unrelated areas.
Use relevant and credible sources specific to the question.
Refer to scholarly views when discussing concepts, then critically analyse them.
Be familiar with all your sources so you can apply them in both your presentation and discussion.
Prepare a written text beforehand to help structure your talk and clarify your main ideas.
Make sure you are well-prepared to handle open and relevant questions from your lecturer and seminar group.
Presentation length: 10 minutes (allowed range: 9–11 minutes). Presentations 2+ minutes over the limit will be penalised.
Be ready for an additional 5-minute discussion after your presentation.
Use appropriate visual aids, such as PowerPoint slides.
Slides should be clearly structured with a maximum of 4 points per slide.
Upload your PowerPoint slides ahead of time via Brightspace Assignments.
Use the sources provided on the subject site; you may also include relevant CSU library sources.
Provide proper Chicago 16 referencing for all sources used, including citations on the slides.
Content: You should feel comfortable with the topic you choose or it should be an area that you would like to further expand your knowledge.

The assessment required students to prepare a 10-minute presentation comparing Al Ghazāl’s method for treating the “disease of the heart (through actions)” with another scholar’s perspective. This was to be followed by a 5-minute Q&A and discussion with the lecturer and peers.
Key requirements included:
Choosing a topic aligned with personal interest or knowledge area.
Addressing the question directly without diverting into unrelated areas.
Using credible scholarly sources relevant to the question.
Referring to and critically analysing scholarly views.
Preparing a written text to structure the presentation.
Creating a PowerPoint presentation (no more than 4 points per slide) and uploading it via Brightspace before the deadline.
Providing accurate referencing in Chicago 16th style, with page numbers and direct links for online sources.
Being prepared to answer questions and sustain discussion confidently.
The academic mentor worked with the student through a guided process, ensuring each stage of the task was clear and well-executed:
Understanding the Question
The mentor first explained the focus of the task: to compare Al Ghazāl’s method with another scholar.
Together, they clarified key terms such as “disease of the heart” and its treatment through actions.
The student was encouraged to select a suitable comparative scholar whose work would allow for a meaningful analysis.
Structuring the Content
The mentor helped the student outline the presentation into logical sections:
Introduction (topic, relevance, aim)
Al Ghazāl’s method (core ideas, actions, philosophy)
Comparative scholar’s perspective
Critical analysis (similarities, differences, insights)
Conclusion (key findings, reflection)
Research and Sources
Guidance was provided on locating credible sources from the CSU library and subject site.
The mentor stressed the importance of Chicago 16 referencing with page numbers and links.
The student was encouraged to read selectively but critically, highlighting passages relevant to the comparison.
Drafting and Writing
The student prepared a written text for the presentation.
The mentor reviewed drafts, ensuring that arguments directly addressed the question and avoided unnecessary diversions.
Feedback emphasized clarity, critical analysis, and linking back to the assessment requirements.
PowerPoint Development
The mentor guided the student in preparing slides with concise points (no more than four per slide).
Visual aids were suggested (diagrams, quotes, or key concepts) to strengthen engagement.
Slides were reviewed to ensure proper referencing and clear structure.
Practice and Delivery
The student rehearsed the 10-minute presentation under the mentor’s guidance.
Attention was given to timing, pacing, and clear explanation of scholarly views.
The mentor simulated a Q&A session, helping the student practice answering open and critical questions.
By following this process, the student produced a well-structured and critically informed presentation that:
Met the 10-minute time requirement and included a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
Presented a balanced comparison between Al Ghazāl’s ideas and another scholar’s perspective.
Demonstrated the use of credible sources with correct Chicago 16 referencing.
Engaged with the topic critically rather than descriptively.
Delivered slides that were visually clear and concise.
