You have been approached by a family member who tells you they have a copy of a family history that was put together by your father in the early 1980s on his first computer, an Osborne 1. The actual computer itself, plus the six 5 ¼” floppy disks on which the information is stored (they have a label on them saying 'Family History Pt1, Pt 2' etc.) have just been discovered in a box in the attic of their old house.

[NB. The Osborne 1 might or might not be in working condition – it is up to you to decide how this part of the scenario will play out, but your paper must state your assumption about the state of the Osborne 1 and then proceed from there.]

It is felt that the family history told here would be very interesting as there is now no one left from that generation to tell the family’s story. Thus the younger family members are keen to try and access the information stored on these disks.
You have been approached, as someone knowledgeable in this area, for advice. Because family members are spread around the world, and many are interested in this, you have decided to write quite a detailed paper, complete with further references, to let them know what the issues are and how they may be addressed.

For this assessment you need to write an informal report, ie. no table of contents, executive summary or letter of transmittal but the report must include:
•an introduction
•general background to the issues of hardware and software obsolescence
•some detailed advice as to how to deal with this specific situation, including a recommendation about how to distribute the recovered data to other family members
•recommendations as to the next steps to keep the information useable over time
