Assessment 3

Task Description

As the cybersecurity professional employed with one of the ‘big 4’ consulting companies (Deloitte, EY, PWC or KPMG) you are required to present some of your activities and results in a recorded presentation.

Task 1: Mitre Att&ck Analysis and Presentation

Using your acquired knowledge and practical skills with MITRE ATT&CK and threat intelligence, you are required to walk through the steps in your analysis and explain how you determined some of the tactics and techniques for GoldRekt in Assessment 2. You must demonstrate your proficiency using the MITRE ATT&CK framework and tools and presenting your analysis on an ATT&CK Navigator spreadsheet.

Note: Simply copying and pasting scores from external sources is a poor strategy for success in this task and may result in academic misconduct. You must explain and justify your use of metrics and TTPs that you have individually determined in your presentation. You should use any other resources that were provided to you, or that you used and referenced in the previous assessment, to complete the presentation.

Task 2: Dfir Presentation

You are to record the steps you took to answer any of the DFIR investigation questions in Assessment 2. You must show your steps and activities using any software you utilised to answer the questions. Screenshots will not be acceptable for this presentation.

Follow These Steps to Create Your Presentation:

Step 1: Select the content that will help you convey your main points. You will likely have slides as well as using screen share when necessary to talk through how you completed the analysis.

Step 2: Design your slides – you should include visual aids, such as PowerPoint slides, to support your presentation. Use a maximum of 4 slides plus 1 slide of references. They should only contain your key points.

Minimise clutter and text.
• Use a large font size (e.g. 24 pt).
• Use a text colour that contrasts with your background.
• Are there any visual graphics that would increase the impact of your presentation?

Step 3: Organise your slides so that your presentation has a logical flow. Be sure to reference your information sources where appropriate.

Step 4: Record your presentation as an MP4 file. You can use VoiceThread or Zoom to record yourself (or any similar application).

Assessment Requirements – Summary

In this assessment, students are required to act as cybersecurity professionals working for one of the "Big 4" consulting firms (Deloitte, EY, PwC, or KPMG). The assessment consists of two major tasks:

Task 1: MITRE ATT&CK Analysis and Presentation

  • Analyse and explain the tactics and techniques for the GoldRekt case (from Assessment 2).
  • Demonstrate proficiency with MITRE ATT&CK framework and ATT&CK Navigator spreadsheet.
  • Justify use of metrics and TTPs (not copy-pasted).
  • Present findings in a recorded video with clear explanation.

Task 2: DFIR (Digital Forensics & Incident Response) Presentation

  • Record step-by-step process of answering DFIR investigation questions from Assessment 2.
  • Demonstrate activities using the actual software/tools (not screenshots).
  • Organise into a presentation with 4 key slides + 1 references slide.
  • Ensure clarity, logical flow, and use of proper referencing.

Key Deliverable: A recorded MP4 presentation showing analysis, practical demonstration, and findings with strong justification.

Step-by-Step Mentoring Approach

The academic mentor guided the student through the assessment in a structured, process-oriented way:

Step 1 – Understanding the Assessment Brief

  • The mentor first explained the dual focus: MITRE ATT&CK analysis (theory + framework application) and DFIR investigation (practical demonstration).
  • Clarified that originality and justification of chosen TTPs were essential to avoid academic misconduct.

Step 2 – Structuring the MITRE ATT&CK Task

  • Mentor guided the student to revisit GoldRekt case study from Assessment 2.
  • Helped identify relevant tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) using the MITRE ATT&CK Navigator.
  • Showed how to map findings visually in the spreadsheet and highlight connections.
  • Emphasised on explaining why each TTP was chosen, linking it to real-world threat actor behaviour.

Step 3 – Structuring the DFIR Task

  • Mentor instructed the student to pick one or two investigation questions from Assessment 2.
  • Walked through the use of forensic tools (e.g., log analysis, timeline reconstruction, file integrity checks).
  • Highlighted the importance of showing live tool usage instead of static screenshots.
  • Guided on narrating each action in simple, professional language for presentation clarity.

Step 4 – Designing the Presentation Slides

  • Mentor ensured the slides followed a minimalist style:
    • Max 4 key content slides + 1 references slide.
    • Only essential points, avoiding text-heavy content.
    • Added visuals like ATT&CK matrices, flow diagrams, or investigation workflow charts.
  • Mentor also reinforced correct referencing using Harvard style.

Step 5 – Recording the Presentation

  • Guided the student to use Zoom to record both screen-share (for live tool use) and slide narration.
  • Suggested rehearsing multiple times to ensure smooth delivery, logical flow, and professional tone.
  • Checked final MP4 for clarity, logical sequence, and academic integrity.

Outcome & Learning Achievements

Through this guided process, the student successfully:

  • Produced a structured and professional MP4 presentation.
  • Demonstrated practical proficiency with MITRE ATT&CK and DFIR tools.
  • Showed the ability to justify analysis choices, avoiding plagiarism.
  • Designed clear, concise, and professional slides.
  • Met the learning objectives:
    • Applying advanced cybersecurity frameworks (MITRE ATT&CK).
    • Conducting digital forensic investigations.
    • Communicating findings effectively in a professional consulting context.
    • Understanding the importance of originality, referencing, and academic integrity.
