Ethical issues are intended to bring awareness and sensitivity where professionals of IT sectors have ethical and legal responsibilities to secure the confidentiality of the data of the organization and the clients. 1. Select a real-life technology based situation that requires an individual to make an ethical decision. Either from your own experience, or from a news article, blog site, media or journal article.

2. Briefly outline the situation. State the source of your situation.

3. Analyse the ethical situation presented in your chosen case study using the Doing Ethics Technique (DET). You will need to refer to the papers on the DET listed in the “Text and Learning Materials” section of this outline. These papers will be available on Moodle.

4. You must include in your analyses reference to at least two (2) classical theories. This can be at a relatively high level but you must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of at least two classical ethical theories (Virtue Ethics, Consequentialism, Duty based ethics).

5. In addition you are required to, where appropriate, cite ICT codes of ethics. You may use NZ’s IITP code of ethics, or the Australian Computer Society Code of ethics, or both. The choice is yours.

6. The word limit is 1200 words +/- 10%. Note headings, citations, references and appendices do not count towards the word limit.

7. Include a reference list (Bibliography) at the end of your essay. You must use the correct APA referencing style and all references listed in your bibliography must correspond to all in-text citations. You must include at least three (3) quality references. Failure to correctly cite material and provide quality references will incur penalties.
