Assignment Task: Abstract Traffic lights are essential in any city to monitor the traffic flow efficiently. Along with avoiding and/or decreasing the chances of any incidents related to over speeding drivers and improving road safety, their function is also to ease the traffic flow in busy areas and prevent traffic congestions for smoother, easier journeys. However, in large metropolitan cities, such as London, that keep growing and getting busier with more vehicles daily, traffic lights are dated technologies and not as efficient in their jobs as they should be. The roads keep getting more congested and create longer delays. Often, it is due to traffic light signals that are not able to manage congestions efficiently. To make car journeys better, the purpose of this project is to research a technology to make traffic lights “smarter”. Allowing a computer, or more precisely, a system, to manage traffic through cities and make travel faster and more efficient by feeding it patterns of the traffic flow through machine learning algorithms and especially designed Artificial Intelligence. Introduction and Background Any person that drives around the world, hate one thing the most: traffic. Be it either caused by the rush hour or an accident that causes roads to be blocked. I have had a driving license for over three years and I have been driving ever since, either privately or professionally, in different countries around the world. My most recent experience was as a cab driver in London and I realised how congested a city could be. In my experience and other cab drivers,’ I found out that most of the traffic was just till some traffic lights. Once a vehicle reached and crossed certain traffic lights at certain intersections, there’d be no traffic after that at all. After researching a bit I discovered that most intersections are equipped with light sensing technologies that make the signals turn green if a vehicle approaches and it is safe to do so. I tried to look online and see if I could find any indications on how the traffic lights were managed and if there was a computer behind them deciding in a smart way what to do. I did find that there are some projects around the world aiming to make traffic lights more efficient, but none of them are working completely and they are either limited to pilot projects or technologies pending tests and patents. I decided then to conduct research to find a way to create my own method to make traffic lights smarter. The research that will be conducted in this project is an innovative solution for cities aiming to be “smart” that will allow them to manage traffic in the best way possible. This will allow for citizens to spend less time stuck on the road, as there will be less traffic and, possibly, less traffic incidents caused by speeding. It is also in the best interests of citizens who are afraid of possible insurance-scammers that fake incidents at traffic lights to be compensated fraudulently. The aim of this project is to allow cities, councils and the police to monitor the roads more efficiently, without the presence of human resources that must constantly be present to monitor intersections, cameras, sensors, etc. This will be possibly achieved with the creation of an algorithm that implements machine learning technologies to learn the patterns of various intersections to know in advance which ones are going to meet more traffic at what time, subsequently turning the lights green or red depending on what it has learnt with the data collected. The project will also research technologies that enable traffic intersections to communicate with cars in the surroundings to collect useful data to make the algorithm work more efficiently. Such as GPS incorporated cars to communicate their physical location, speed, direction, and vector of the journey. Aims and Objectives -

Technologies and Resources Various technologies and resources will be used to make this project reach a positive outcome. Many resources will be obtained via the Internet and the University library. The Internet is a resource for countless technologies that may help me design and build the project. Majority of which can be accessed either online or installed on any machine for free. The following technologies will be a big part in allowing me to create the project:
  • NetBeans – it’s an opensource desktop programme developed by Oracle, that lets users build programs and share them via an online repository.
  • Visual Studio – one of the most powerful programming development environments created by Microsoft
  • Star UML – a tool used to create class diagrams and relationships between tables for the database
  • MySQL – an open-source cross-platform web server tool that allows to edit web-based work easily and provides support for developing applications that are server based
  • Data Generator – might be used to create mock-up, simulated data to store in databases
  • Brackets.io – in case I need to create a web-based interface. Brackets is a lightweight powerful HTML, PHP editor.
  • iCat – it is a platform provided by the Kingston University Library, that allows students to get journals, news, books and other various research resources from the Kingston network.
Methodology There are different methodologies that could be followed to complete this project. Each one of them has their own pros and cons. So, after careful consideration, I have decided to opt for the Agile approach. That is because, in program development, as opposed to the Waterfall model Approach, which doesn’t allow the user to go back to the previous stage once it is completed, the Agile methodology allows the idea of change and iterations in each phase of the project development cycle. The Waterfall model disadvantages because if there are faults and errors that need changes to be made to them, the whole project must start from the beginning. Whereas, the Agile method simply allows you to go back to an iteration and modify it to work.
