This competency assessment assesses the following learning competency:

IT537-2: Synthesize cybersecurity threats and their potential consequences to assess risk.

Assessment Details

Perform the following three labs, making sure to document your results with either screenshots or notes for your own documentation so that you can remember what you did in the labs. Access the uCertify links under the Table of Contents. Locate the Lesson and Lab name and complete the lab assigned.

uCertify Cybersecurity Essentials LiveLab

Lesson 3: Examining Browsing History Options
Lesson 3: Configuring Application Control Policy
uCertify Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

Lesson 3: Configuring User Access Control Settings
Using your lab results, write a 2- to 3-page analysis that provides an assessment of application control methods found in the labs and the reading. You should identify a minimum of three methods as well as specifying whether the control method relates to a locally installed application or a web-based application. An example would be a business using a web-based application that stores the data it generates on the cloud vendor’s equipment. The cloud vendor can access the data stored on their equipment and may be required to give that data to a third party if presented with a warrant. The mitigation strategy might be to only allow less sensitive data to be stored in the cloud while applications that generate very sensitive data are locally installed.

Assessment 2 Part 1: Application Management

Assessment Outcome addressed in this activity:

Discover cybersecurity problems.

Purpose

To block or restrict unauthorized applications from running in ways that put the user's information at risk, application control is necessary. Functions required by application control include validity checks, input controls, and forensic control, among a range of other controls. Using appropriate application controls helps align applications with CIA principles and prevent malicious applications from executing and thus putting data at risk.

Assessment 2 Part 1 Instructions

Create an analysis assessing a minimum of three application control methods discovered in your lab results and the reading. Feel free to include more methods in your analysis, but three should be the minimum. Be sure to note whether the control method is specific to a locally installed application or a cloud application. Following your application control analysis, provide 2–3 pages of discussion that includes a description of the application control methods, how each of the methods relates to risk for the organization, and how each method mitigates that risk.

The minimum page count is 2–3 pages (excluding title page, etc.). If you require more pages to thoroughly discuss the identified methods, then include them. Your paper should use Times New Roman 12-point font, be double spaced, and use correct APA formatting (title page and reference page). Be sure to use proper APA in-text citations that match your reference list.

In accordance with the Academic Integrity Policy, your assessment will be automatically submitted to Turnitin. The policy states that papers submitted for credit in any course should contain less than 25% non-original material, so avoid large sections of direct quotes and be sure that you use APA formatting to properly cite and reference all non-original material.

Assessment 2 Part 1 Requirements

The analysis provides a detailed assessment of a minimum of three application control methods identified from the labs and the reading.
The descriptive section of the analysis is a minimum of 2–3 pages of content (excluding title page, etc.) and uses Times New Roman 12-point font, is double spaced, and uses correct APA formatting (title page and reference page).

  • No spelling errors.
  • No grammar errors.
  • No APA style errors.

Lesson 4: Configuring Firewall Settings
Using your lab results, write a 2- to 3-page analysis that provides an assessment of network management methods found in the labs and the reading. You should identify a minimum of three methods as well as specifying whether the network management method relates to a physical on-premises network component or a cloud/virtual network component. An example would be discovering old unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling running above a suspended ceiling on the premises. A reasonable mitigation strategy would be to design and adopt a structured cabling plan that replaces the old cabling with shielded twisted pair (STP) or fiber and runs the cabling through a shielded pipe.

Assessment 2 Part 2: Network Management Methods

Assessment Outcome addressed in this activity:

Prepare appropriate steps for strategy and policy construction.
Purpose

Network management has several important functions, including administration and inventory management of a network, the operations and monitoring of a network, maintenance, repair, and updates, the provisioning of resources, and the security, tracking, and threat resolution of a network. Some of these functions are fairly simple, such as inventory or maintenance, but others, such as security and threat resolution, can be complex. All of the functions are necessary to keep the network secure and functioning properly, but some are more closely related to cybersecurity than others.

Turnitin Analysis

A special feature is available to help you with reviewing your competency assessment for plagiarism. When you submit your assessment to the Competency Assessment Dropbox, your assessment will automatically be analyzed by the plagiarism detection tool Turnitin. Soon after you submit your assessment, you will be able to view the Turnitin Originality Report. Originality Reports provide a summary of matching or highly similar text found in a submitted paper. When an Originality Report is available for viewing, an icon will appear in the report column of the Assessment Inbox. Originality Reports are only available in the Inbox. For this reason, you will need to download the report prior to the grading of the competency assessment. To do this, click on the print icon at the bottom of the Originality Report. This will prepare a readable, PDF version of the Originality Report that you can save to your computer.
