Highlights
Task
One of the most important skills of an incident handler is the ability to run through the steps of an incident response plan off the top of their head during an incident. The task is to write a high-level incident response plan outlining the major steps involved in dealing with an incident.
The plan should be written as if providing guidance to an incident response team within an organisation. Templates and example Incident Response plans will be available on the Resources section of Interact in Week 1.
Playbooks provide additional details and guidance for response teams to follow when handling specific incident types. Your response plan should contain one playbook that can be followed for a specific type of security incident to assist incident responders in providing an efficient and effective response.
Some scenarios that may be considered could include, but are not limited to, the following
Ransomware/malware attack/outbreak
Denial of Service (or Distributed Denial of Service) attack
Unauthorised access / data breach
Physical theft or loss
Insider privilege misuse
External threat notification.
The above list is not exhaustive but is intended to provide guidance of some typical incident types. Ensure that your playbook addresses all relevant areas of the incident response phases – from preparation through to Lessons Learned.
The playbook should be written as if providing guidance to an incident response team within an organisation. The playbook may be included as an appendix or separate section of your response plan.
