Case study

Jackie is an inpatient on the hospital ward where you (a nursing student) are currently on placement. When registered nurses (RNs) attempt to care for Jackie, Jackie presents as sullen and uncooperative. The RNs are concerned that Jackie’s lack of cooperation is prolonging her recovery and length of hospital stay. However, when you are assisting Jackie during mealtime, Jackie strikes up a conversation with you as she feels you are of a similar age and background. Jackie shares how her pet dog of fourteen years recently died of cancer, and that she has since been feeling sad and depressed. You feel empathy for Jackie because you also love animals, and you try to build rapport by sharing how you felt when your cat died several years ago. After your conversation, Jackie thanks you for understanding and says that she will search for you on social media after she has been discharged from hospital. Jackie also asks whether you will be caring for her tomorrow and if you will tell anyone about this conversation.

Assessment 2: Structured Discussion Template

Step 1: Identify issues and collect information.

Step 2: Evaluate the issues

Choose one ethical or legal issue identified in Step 1.

Identify relevant legal, ethical, and professional guidelines and explain how you would apply them to the chosen legal/ethical issue (approx. 400 words).

Step 3: Action – what to do in practice

Based upon Steps 1 and 2, outline a plan to respond to the situation. You need to consider your scope of practice as a nursing student and what options/resources are available to you (approx. 350 words).
