Jamie is a first-year student on his first clinical placement in a hospital. At the end of the first week of Jamie’s placement the group of students from Jamie’s class get together for a debrief with their facilitator. Jamie was excited to discuss his patient Salvatore.
Jamie showed the class the card and 100 dollars that he received that day from Salvatore’s family. Jamie explained that the family gave the present to him because he took such good care of him.
Jamie was able act as interpreter for the registered nurse when she asked Salvatore if she could do his wound dressing. Salvatore also asked lots of other questions about his treatment which the registered nurse was able to answer with Jamie interpreting.
After the RN completed the dressing, he said that he and Salvatore took a “selfie” together and uploaded it to Jamie’s Facebook account. Jamie said he hoped that his family at home could see how much he had learned in such a short time. He also said that Salvatore’s granddaughter had accepted his friend request on Instagram and that he hoped to catch up with her in the next couple of weeks.
