Jane is a 9-year-old, right-handed, monolingual English speaking girl in grade 3. She was referred by a General Practioner for a neuropsychological evaluation to assess her current level of neurocognitive functioning due to behavioural problems, emotional concerns and poor school performance reported by her adopted parent. Jane’s personal and family background history: Per the hospital records and adoption records, Jane’s biological mother reported drinking before and during pregnancy (several drinks during the day and generally in a binge drinking pattern, 4-5 drinks a day on weekends and sometimes on a weekday”). Her biological mother and father also occasionally used methamphetamine and marijuana. The residential area (Happy valley) of her parents is characterised by various social problems, such as high rates of poverty, severe unemployment, high prevalence of alcohol abuse and increasing incidences of child abuse and neglect. It appears that the prevalence of alcohol abuse is quite widely in the Happy valley community. It is estimated that about 70 % of residents are addicted to alcohol. Happy valley is known for it’s wine farming activities. Jane’s biological mother who was 5.5 months pregnant attempted to cut down on her alcohol and substance use. She reported only binge drinking “occasionally” since knowing she was pregnant, though continued to drink more than four drinks per occasion and on several weekends during her third trimester. Jane's biological mother reported minimal prenatal care and her nutritional status was unclear throughout the pregnancy. Child protective services removed Jane from her biological mother's care at the hospital when she had a positive toxicology screen at birth for FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). Jane's biological mother relinquished her rights at that time. Jane was placed in a foster care home after discharge.
