2. Demonstration of the foundational listening and communication skills including the ability to establish a collaborative working relationship with the client, establish rapport, establish inclusive boundary setting, demonstrate empathy, respond to diversity and context and develop a shared understanding of the client’s goals.

 3. A critique of either strength based and/or solution focused/ and/or an anti-oppressive approach and their application in this scenario. This should include discussion of how this was applied, how appropriate you felt the application of this/these approaches were and how, from your perspective the client responded. Jerome is a 50 year-old man who is in hospital for 10 days following elective surgery on his right knee. He is originally from Iran and emigrated to Australia 27 years ago. He has a wife, Zemira, and three adult children. Jerome has worked for a telecommunications company for over 10 years and is currently in middle management. 

Jerome has requested to see a SW to discuss a number of issues that he has been dealing with. He hasn’t discussed these concerns with anyone and prefers not to ‘burden’ his wife and children. He reports that there are ‘whisperings’ at work of potential losses in his section and the potential for a round of redundancy offers. He also reports a number of recent personal setbacks. These include the death of his uncle in 2014 with whom he was very close as they emigrated to Australia together. Jerome’s second daughter has also separated from her husband recently after 7 years of marriage and 2 young children.
