In this sermon we will look at what it means to remain in Jesus, the one and only true vine and how through him we can produce good fruit in our lives. This idea will be unpacked in the following three ways: i. Jesus shows that he is the true and genuine vine that Israel failed to be; ii. Jesus teaches us that if we are in the true vine, we will produce true fruit; iii. Jesus teaches that every branch attached to the true vine will be pruned by the Father.

• To unpack this point I will talk about how Israel failed to be the vine of God, but how God did not desert them but instead sent Jesus. To redeem them, Jesus reduced himself to death. He became the dead branch that was cut off and thrown into the fire, so that we never ever have to fear being cut off from God if we are in Jesus. Because of his faithfulness, his sacrifice, his courage, his love we get to be part of God’s family. Jesus says, I am the vine and you are the branches (John 15:5). We get to enjoy a relationship with God through Jesus the true and genuine vine of God. A relationship that we could never have enjoyed apart from Jesus.

ii) Jesus teaches us that if we are in the true vine, we will produce true fruit

• I will explore this point by returning to plants on stage and speaking about how the fruit of the vine will reflect the source from which it is getting its nutrients. In the same way if you are plugged into Jesus you will start to look like Jesus. The Holy Spirit will be transforming you little by little.
• Refer to Luke 6:43-44 where Jesus says, “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.”
