RESPONSE JOURNAL: As you read these chapters, respond in a "Double-Entry" journal which is a strategy that combines your ability to take notes from a text and to respond to them. As you read the text, record on the left-hand side a passage or from the text with the page number. On the right-hand side, make your comment about the passage. This response might be a question, a connection, a drawing, a reflection, etc. Set up your journal using the following example from Wild Geese. Include 7 entries (one for each chapter) - an example from Chapter 6 is given below:.

2. VOCABULARY: "Expand Your Vocabulary" Bookmark As you come across words that are unfamiliar to you, record them with the page number on your bookmark. At the end of reading Chapters 1 - 7, go back to these words in the story, use an online dictionary to find the definitions of each word, and record the definition that seems to best fit its context. You will likely have one or two words for each chapter. An example from Chapter 1 of the novel Wild Geese has been provided:

1.  Describe each of the Gare children. Identify key personality or character traits for each with quotations and page numbers from the novel to support your answer.
2.  Describe Caleb Gare and what is important to him. To what lengths does he go to get what he wants? Give at least 4 specific examples.
3.  Why do the children stay on the farm under the tyrannical presence of their father?
4.  Describe Amelia Gare. Who is Mark Jordan? To what lengths will she go to protect Mark Jordan?
5.  Who is Bart Nugent and what is his importance to the novel?
6.  In what ways has Caleb blackmailed his neighbors?
7.  In what ways is Caleb shown to be a “spiritual counterpart of the land” (35) and a “symbol of the land” (92).
8.  Discuss the symbolism of the wild geese throughout Chapters 1 – 7. Give quotations to support your answer.
9.  Who is Malcolm? What is his significance to the novel?
10.  “Life was smothering, overwhelming her, like a pillow pressed against her face. Like a feather tick pinning down her body.” (61). Give examples of this oppression from Judith’s life.
11.  Quote to prove Caleb’s jealousy over Amelia’s love for Mark Jordan’s father. What is significant about this feeling?

12.  Mark and Lind have an intellectual conversation about farmers and their connection with the land which is a common theme in Canadian Literature. Summarize this conversation on page 93.
