This exercise is designed to assess your skills in extracting, paraphrasing, summarizing, and evaluating information from a piece of primary literature. Journal club is a commonly used activity in clinical pharmacy designed to encourage individuals to stay up to date with emerging medical literature. Most often, journal club is led by a pharmacy student or resident. That individual is generally expected to create a handout designed to highlight key study information and stimulate discussion regarding the strengths, limitations, and clinical impact of that study. For this assignment, students will be expected to identify the most pertinent information to include in a condensed, well-written, well-referenced handout.

Please note that it is not the intent of this assignment for students to re-write the assigned article; rather key information should be paraphrased in order to display understanding to the instructor. The only times when information may be reproduced exactly as it appears in the article is noted in the rubric below. Failure to paraphrase will result in zero points for the particular section; cases of repeat offense may be subject to loss of further points. Cases of deliberate plagiarism will result in, at least, failure of the assignment and, potentially, referral to the Honor Council. Students should complete this assignment as individuals. While it may be reasonable to confer with a colleague after you have completed an initial draft of the assignment, cases of excessive collaboration where it is evident that students completed the assignment together is unacceptable.

Journal club handouts will be due in Canvas and used during class to promote discussion. All students will be expected to use the provided template. The handout should be no more than about 4.5 pages, written in Calibri size 10 font, and prepared and uploaded as a blinded Microsoft Word document. You should refrain from including personal identifiers in your handout in order to help facilitate blinded grading. On rotations, your handouts will be shorter; however, I set a higher length limit in order to provide you ample space to explain why you have identified study strengths and limitations (be sure it is clear which critique points are strengths, and which are limitations) and provide rationale. This would likely be done verbally in practice, but it helps me to assess your thought process and how you are doing in the course to have it written out. Review the handout template and example for more information. If you are not able to articulate your strengths, limitations, and rationale in clear, written English, you will not receive credit for the item.
