TASK Share your thinking about the function of the writer & journal in your development as a writer in this unit and consider how you might use the idea of a journal in the classroom with students of different proficiencies as writers. Obtain an A5 size notebook, which will be referred to as your ‘Writer’s Journal’. Start to closely Observe aspects of an environment that is very familiar to you and describe objects through ‘snippets’ of writing in your journal. Walk in a natural environment. Take photographs of the environment from different angles/distances Use the photographs to write a short descriptive piece in your writer’s journal. Sit at a café and discretely ‘people-watch’. Identify someone who interests you and note in your ‘writer’s journal’ aspects of their appearance, mannerisms and movements. Imagine what their life is like and write down your thoughts. ‘Eave’s drop’- this week capture snippets of conversation from real-life situations and/or the media and record them in your writer’s journal. ‘Memory Lane’ – recall something that affected you emotionally, try to re-capture feelings/thoughts. Use metaphor (i.e. a symbol or set of symbols to represent the feelings/thoughts). Record the metaphoric representation in your writer’s journal. Briefly observe a living creature. Watch its behaviour: how it moves, where it goes. In your journal, describe the world through its eyes: interpret the world through its thoughts.
