Assignment Task:
Task:
Background research:
Watch this video about a proposal to build a “Northern Capital” : a city on the shores of Lake Argyle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5-LJg93b9oNote that the video was made several years back and no progress has yet been made on the proposal.
This video outlines the case for a new city or cities and suggests Universities could be a catalyst for development around Darwin in northern Australia:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVkNRh3i4MYIn Project Part 1 you have explored this website about the proposal to build an Education city near Melbourne
https://www.australianeducationcity.com/homeUnfortunately this proposal has recently been rejected by the state government. In this project you will explore the feasibility of a proposal for a quarantine centre on the shores of Lake Argyle. The quarantine centre would be designed so that it can be used for quarantine for newly arrived international students. The new students would be provided with educational and recreational activities during the quarantine period. In the event that the quarantine station was no longer needed the facilities would also be designed converted to the nucleus and first stage of a new education city providing low cost housing for and unique education opportunities for students in a wilderness environment.
Required skills
You will need to research information from the internet to answer some of the questions, and also use some of your results from the previous assignments that you have completed in this unit.
I have indicated in red italics the questions that will need internet research.
In this assignment you will demonstrate your skills in some of:
using quantitative concepts, in particular fractions, ratios and proportions, percentages, percentage change
Interpreting graphical representations including maps and writing about quantitative information.
Presenting quantitative information graphically including graphs and infographics
.
- Question 1 The Lake Argyle site : Using Google Maps
- (a) We will investigate the former Argyle Diamond mind site as suitable site near the shores of Lake Argyle, in north western Australia.
- Note: that each student will need to choose a location for their proposed Quarantine Centre/Education city.
- Your site should be within 40km of the Argyle diamond mine. Stake your claim early to get the most desirable site!
- You have been allocated an amount of land in the table below:
- Area
- (Square Kilometres)
- Anastasia 5
- Imede 12.5
- Dylan 13.19
- YaoYao 0.5
- Tiffany 2
- Arooba 7
- Jehad 4
- Eyad 3
- Viet Qang 6
- What is the Latitude and longitude of the Argyle Diamond mine? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swKBi6hHHMALatitude =
- Longitude =
- (ii) Include maps on various scales showing the location and boundary of the site and the surrounding region. Use the Windows snipping tool to copy from Google maps.
- Maps:
- Small Scale map
- Medium Scale map
- Large Scale map
- (iii) What factor or factors influenced your choice of location? (e.g. topography (flat or hilly?), are there existing roads, existing electricity supply, views of the lake, is it near the airport ?)
- …………………………………………………………………………………………………….
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- Are there any existing buildings at the mine which could be be used for a hospital, or for administration? Use satellite view to estimate the size any existingbuildings.
- (b) What is the length, width of your chosen site.
- What is the area in hectares (HINT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlAjaDDDl2Y………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- ……………………,………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
- (Hint: you could estimate area by using a feature of google maps by “counting squares” or alternatively by using the scale of the map find the approximate the length and width of your proposed site in kilometres or metres, then use Area =Length Times Width)
- (c)
- (i) What is the ratio of the land area of the Werribee Australian Education site to the area of your proposed Lake Argyle site?
-
- Werribee site Area : Lake Argyle Site Area=
- How many times larger or smaller is your land area than the AEC site?
- ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
-
- (Hint: you will need to find Scale factor= Area of your chosen Lake Argyle siteArea of Australian Education city site at East Werribee )
- (d) Suppose that you wish to build a scaled up version of the Werribee AEC plan on the Lake Argyle site. Given the data you obtained in part 1 of the project estimate the corresponding data for the Lake Argyle project.
- East Weribee AEC Lake Argyle Site
- Population Number of students Number of houses Number of flats/apartments Number of student housing units Proposed total project cost Number of long term jobs Number of construction jobs Number of staff (assuming 1:20 staff student ratio) Hint: For example estimate using : Argyle Pop=Scale factor ×Werribee AEC Pop)
- Question 2. Water Supply
- How much water is in Lake Argyle.
- That is what is its average storage capacity ? (In Gigalitres)
- (b) What is the annual water consumption per person in Australia? (In Kilolitres)
- (c) Assume that 10% of water in Lake Argyle was available to the residents of the proposed city each year. Also, assume that the residents at Lake Argyle will consume the same amount as the average Australian residents. What upper limit is placed on the proposed projects population by the available water?
- (Hint Population Upper Limit = 10% of Lake Argyles Water capacity Annual Water Consumption per capitaQuestion 3 Power Supply
- (a)
- Suppose you decide to use solar power to generate additional power for the new city.
- What is the power output of one square metre of solar panel? (in watts and in Kw)
- ???? watts
- Assuming 8 hours per day of usable sunshine How much energy in Kwh does 1 square metre of solar panel produce.
- Research the average daily energy consumption in Australia per person.
- (c)
- What area would be needed for solar panels per resident ?
- Area required= Daily Energy Required per rsidentDaily energy Produced per square metre=
- Question 4 Road Transport.
- (i) Using Google maps produce a map showing the location of the Lake argyle site and the nearest road ;
- Map showing City site and nearest road
- (iii) How many km of highway will be needed to connect the Argyle site to existing road network?
- Length of new Highway required= ??? km
- (Hint: for example: assume the highway goes in a straight line to the Highway 1 at its nearest point and use the map scale)
- Assume that the proposed highway costs $500,000 per km for a two lane highway. What will it cost to connect your project to the road network?
- Question 5.
- Suppose that as an economy measure all of the students were housed in tiny houses like those investigated in Assignment 1 and assume that students would provide the labor for constructing their own residences. How much would it cost for the materials for all the tiny houses. Assume that to build flats would cost $100,000 each. How much would be saved by replacing them with tiny houses?
- Question 6.
- Write 50 to 100 words in support of, or against the proposal giving quantitative arguments
- Question 7
- List the websites you have consultor ed used in this project
