Assignment Task:

Task:

The essay should cover:
• Your critical (in both a positive and negative sense) review of the study. “Critical” is essentially about not being gullible and think for yourself, not necessarily concluding that everything is bad. This also means to “stay on the surface” and avoid being dragged down to the content level. For instance, it is much more important to evaluate how the methods give a justification of the result than what the results actually are.
• A broader contextualization of each of the sections that shows your insight and knowledge of methodology. In brief: explain the methodological knowledge from the course (in a broad sense) and contrast it with what the study actually did (which will have a more narrow focus). Avoid to just give general info from the course book – we have also read the methods literature. The important thing is to show that you can use your knowledge to “diagnose” a research paper. More in detail, this means:

Methodology
This is about the overall methodology (e.g. GT, case study, etc.) – What does this methodology entail, what can it achieve/how does it usually work, which types exist (e.g. Glaser, etc.) and what does the reviewed study do, etc.?

Research philosophy
What is research philosophy, why does it matter, which ontologies/epistemologies do we distinguish and what does the study actually do?
• The studies usually do not tell you directly how they position themselves. So, you need to analyse at the text. What do you see that points you in which direction? Build up a solid argument. It may also be that the study shows contradicting directions, which you can tease out based on your methodological knowledge.
• The role that theory plays in the design and analysis might give you hints. Often studies that are strongly pre-defined and driven by theory tend to be more positivistic.
• Methodological “keywords” could also give you hints. For instance, a narrative study often points to constructionist designs. But do not naively accept what the authors write. I may be just “buzzword” or it may be that they actually analyse the material the way they said they would.
• A process of “exclusion” could give you direction. To give an example: Is the study interested in how language is used to construct reality? This would point to a nominalist/strong constructionist understanding. Is the study teasing out different points of view (social realities) on the “same” phenomenon or how reality is enacted in practice? This would point to a relativist/constructionist study. And so on.

Data collection
What is sampling/selection and how does it matter? How did the study sample? Which types of respondents do they want/have in the study? Which ones did they actually get?
How much material was collected? How was the material collected? And so on...

Data analysis and results
Which methods of analysis, that is: analytical procedures, techniques etc. is actually used in the study? How well are they described? Can you follow every step/do the same thing given the information provided? Is it coherent? What is missing? Here, the contextualization goes more into the direction of explaining what you would expect, given the type of study and analysis method.
Quality insurance measures
What is quality in qualitative research and how does it matter? Which measures/actions did the researchers take to ensure quality? We strongly suggest following the Guba criteria. You can find an article uploaded to the Canvas.
FAQ: Questions previously raised about the Essay
Question: The template on Canvas suggests the order of “summary, methodology, research philosophy” for the report. However, to me and also according to the course book, it is more logical to first discuss the research philosophy before discussing the methodology. Is it allowed to switch the order from Canvas, so that you start with the summary, followed by the philosophy, methodology etc?.
? Yes! If it’s better for your flow of argumentation, you can also go for “summary, research philosophy, methodology”. However, the names of the headlines should be kept.
Question: Is there a guideline regarding the number of words for Summary, Methodology, Research Philosophy...?
? No. We don’t have a detailed guideline for the number of words to be dedicated to the different parts of the essay. You need to decide how much words/space you dedicate to the sections, based on your judgement and insight into what matters the most in the sections. Have in mind to cover both aspects of writing about the study and contextualizing it.
Question: Do we have to describe the research problem, research purpose, and research question in the summary?
? Our suggestion is to include the purpose/goal of the study, as it provides the direction of the study, the methodological/method/technique-related choices, and the findings. However, you should consider the methodological dimension of the findings, not the content dimension. Content means the specific findings, while the methodological dimension addresses how the findings are displayed.
Question: Where should we include the ethics?
? Ethics is not part of the ILO of this assignment (it is covered in Assignment 2).
However, if you see ethical issues that impact the study, you can bring them forward when you discuss the Final Evaluation (strengths, weaknesses, limitations).
Question: Is the course material sufficient for doing this assignment?
? We expect that the course material – the course book, lectures, seminars – is
sufficient to complete the assignment. However, if you want to complement (not replace) your review with further readings, you can do so. Just make sure that you stay consistent (as other books might have different understandings, definitions etc.)
