• Define the term ‘ethics’ in the context of the media and discuss the responsibility of the journalist to create ethical representations of society. Support your discussion with real-life examples. 

• Outline and evaluate two normative press models and their relevance in ethical journalism today with the use of real-life examples. 

• Critically discuss common ethical problems in journalism and support your argument, in detail, with a current (no older than July 2019) South African example of a journalist(s) acting in an unethical manner and the impact of this unethical reporting on society.

Two topics which receive a great deal of global coverage are that of global warming and natural disasters. Between 2019 and 2020, there has been a surge in journalistic content covering these topics throughout the world. With people like Greta Thunberg raising significant environmental awareness and pushing the world for global change, and natural disasters such as Hurricane Idai and the more recent 2019/2020 Australian wildfires which have caused severe devastation across Southern Australia. There are often many debates and ethical discussions centred on these global issues. 

Using the topics of global warming and natural disasters as the focus of your discussion, write an academic essay of between 1 500 – 1 700 words in which you: 

• Evaluate the current journalism landscape, with specific reference to influences and challenges which are faced. Only discuss the points of information which you feel are relevant to the designated topics of global warming and natural disasters. 

• Analyse why these topics transcend global borders and the ethical considerations and obligations of the media in perpetuating these discussions. 

• You may draw on any example of global warming and natural disasters which have happened between 2019 and 2020 to support your argument.
